Franklin County, TN: Teen Charged After Tackling Middle School Football Player, Ending Game Early

A 16-year-old girl is facing charges after authorities say she ran onto a football field and tackled a 13-year-old player, cutting a middle school game short in Franklin County, Tennessee.

The incident took place Wednesday night during a matchup between South Middle School and Cornersville Middle School, according to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. Officials said the teenager was at the game as a spectator when she left the stands, ran onto the field, and tackled one of the young players.

Game Halted, Stadium Cleared

Referees stopped the game immediately after the tackle and had the field cleared. Deputies then worked to empty the stadium, and officials say this was done without any further problems.

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident, though the abrupt ending left many in attendance shaken and confused about what had just happened.

The sheriff’s office said the teen was taken into custody and later released to her parents. She now faces charges of assault and disorderly conduct in connection with the incident.

Long-Term Consequences Handed Down

Beyond the criminal charges, the teen is facing serious restrictions moving forward. She has been permanently banned from all Franklin County School System properties, meaning she will not be allowed on any campus in the district going forward.

Separately, the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association has issued its own penalty, barring her from attending any Cornersville Middle School games, whether played at home or on the road, for a full year.

The story has drawn strong reactions online, with commenters divided over what actually happened on the field. Some social media users claimed the girl ran onto the field to protect a younger sibling who they say was involved in some kind of altercation during the game.

Others pointed to comments suggesting racial slurs may have been exchanged before the tackle occurred, though none of these claims have been confirmed by authorities. A few commenters also disputed the initial report that referees ended the game, suggesting instead that the opposing team walked off due to a shortage of available players after injuries.

As of now, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office has not released additional details addressing these claims, and no further updates on a possible motive have been shared publicly. The case remains under review as it moves through the legal process.
