Cody Sigler’s path to Auburn football has taken him through setbacks, unexpected opportunities and multiple levels of college football.
Now, the defensive lineman is preparing for his final collegiate season on the Plains after working his way from Division II football to the Southeastern Conference.
A native of New Hope, Alabama, Sigler was a standout at New Hope High School, earning All Region recognition and being named Linebacker of the Year as a senior. Despite his accomplishments, his college options were limited. His only offer was from Division III Huntingdon College in Montgomery.
Rather than give up on his football ambitions, Sigler contacted Larry Scott III, who was then the defensive line coach at West Alabama. That message eventually opened the door for him to walk on.
His first season did not go according to plan. Sigler medically redshirted after dealing with several health setbacks, including a concussion, COVID, the flu and surgery to have his tonsils removed. At one point, he was unsure whether football would remain part of his future.
Finding His Opportunity at West Alabama
A call from Scott helped change the direction of Sigler’s career. He returned to West Alabama and eventually earned an opportunity to compete for playing time.
Sigler had to battle experienced players who had remained in college longer because of the COVID era. He eventually found a role on third downs before developing into the player he believed he could become.
In 2024, Sigler started all 11 games for West Alabama and earned first team All Gulf South Conference honors. His performance helped him take the next step into Division I football.
He transferred to Arkansas State, where he continued to develop and earned second team All Sun Belt recognition. That success helped put him on the radar for another major opportunity.
A New Chapter With Auburn
Sigler ultimately chose Auburn, where he reunited with Scott, now an assistant defensive line coach with the Tigers. The familiar coaching relationship played an important role in his decision.
As he enters his final season, Sigler wants to contribute both on the field and by helping younger players develop. He also has his sights set on making an impression in the SEC and experiencing the atmosphere inside Jordan Hare Stadium.
Beyond football, Sigler has spoken about the importance of his faith and the role it has played throughout his journey.
His long term goals extend beyond playing. Sigler hopes to reach the NFL and eventually coach, giving young athletes the same type of encouragement and opportunities that helped shape his own career.
For now, his focus is Auburn and the opportunity ahead. After beginning his college career as a Division II walk on, Sigler has reached the SEC with one final season to make his mark.
