Keelon Russell, an American football quarterback for the Alabama Crimson Tide, grew up in an athletic household where his parents supported his football journey.

His twin sister, Kierston Russell, passed away at the age of 18. She was set to join her brother at the University of Alabama in August.

My thoughts and prayers goes out to you @_pres1dentkee. I can’t imagine the pain you may be going through right now, just know that God is close to the broken hearted and he hears and sees what you are going through. May God make sense of it all.

Keelon is a member of the 2025 college football recruiting class, and Rivals rated him as a five-star recruit. During his junior season, he led Duncanville to its second consecutive 6A Division 1 state title.

He initially committed to play college football for the SMU Mustangs on September 21, 2023, but flipped his commitment to the Alabama Crimson Tide on June 4, 2024.

He enrolled at the University of Alabama in January 2025.

Keelon Russell’s Parents Are The Pillars Behind His Success

Keelon Russell, the son of Brian Russell and April Moore, was born on April 24, 2007, in Mesquite, Texas.

The Russell family is mourning the tragic demise of Kierston Russell, a beloved daughter and sister who passed away at 18.

Keelon’s rise as a standout quarterback at Alabama is a result of his hard work and dedication. However, his parents’ constant support and guidance also played a key role.

Their balanced approach to parenting, which prioritizes both athletic excellence and personal growth, has allowed him to thrive on and off the field.

Brian is a former defensive back at Louisiana Tech University and helped Keelon tackle the challenges of high-level football.

His experience has been invaluable in shaping the rising athlete’s understanding of discipline, work ethic, and the mental toughness required to excel. Moreover, he instilled in his son the importance of leadership and resilience.

Meanwhile, April Moore ensures that academics remain a priority.

She emphasizes the value of learning, drawing on 24 years of experience in education, including her current role as Special Education Coordinator for Uplift Education.

Her impact is evident in Keelon’s dedication to his studies and his recent initiative with Champions for Literacy, where he is working to provide books to Uplift Pinnacle Preparatory in South Dallas.

It fills my heart with pride to see Keelon using his platform to inspire young readers in our community. He is showing that giving back can be as impactful as any achievement on the field.

Nonetheless, Brian and April have created an environment where Keelon can pursue his football dreams without sacrificing personal development.

Their guidance has been the foundation of his success as the quarterback continues to make waves at Alabama.

Keelon Russell’s Parents’ Influence On His Decision To Choose Alabama

Keelon Russell’s decision to commit to the University of Alabama was strongly influenced by his parents, who offered thoughtful guidance, unwavering support, and valuable wisdom throughout the process.

Their influence extended beyond football, helping him evaluate his future with both ambition and balance.

Brian Russell played a significant role in identifying opportunities at Alabama throughout the recruitment process.

Similarly, he highlighted the advantages of a smaller quarterback room, which would allow Keelon to compete for early playing time, preparing him for the next level.

Although Brian and April provided valuable insights, they ensured Keelon had the freedom to make his own choice.

I grew up an Alabama fan. At Alabama, if you have a great season, there is a chance to win the Heisman. You can have a great season at another school and have no chance. They said it was totally up to me. It means going to another state, but I don’t think I’ll get homesick.
