A facebook user alleges that Ragland High School’s enrollment has decreased due to a handful of negative attitudes among faculty members and their failure to take action against bullying.
The 2026–2027 academic year is expected to be the last for Ragland High School (Grades 7–12).
Sometimes, the person who is supposed to protect students becomes part of the problem, and this happens when a teacher picks on kids or allows bullying.
It’s an unfair targeting and makes a child feel small, embarrassed, and afraid to speak up.
Even worse is when a teacher sees bullying and does nothing about it. They send a dangerous message by not stepping in and making the bully feel more powerful.
When an adult in charge behaves this way, it breaks a child’s trust and teaches them that they can’t rely on authority figures for help. It leads to anxiety, a hatred of school, and falling grades.
Every child deserves to learn in a classroom where they feel respected and safe. Teachers have a big responsibility to create that environment, not destroy it.

Ragland High’s Final Bell? Parents Blame Teacher Conduct, Bullying for Closure Threat
Ragland High School is facing closure, with the 2026-2027 school year expected to be its last.
As the community grapples with this news, a parent is speaking out about what she believes are the root causes behind the school’s declining enrollment.
In a recent Facebook post, Shanna Horner alleged that the school’s drop in students is a direct result of negative attitudes among some faculty members and a failure to address bullying.
I’ll always believe my gut instinct, and until they get rid of a handful of the negative attitude faculty members, the numbers will stay down.
Shanna Horner
She suggested that if a survey were conducted with families who left the school system, many would point to a “horrible teacher/ coach that picked on their kid, or that the school allowed their kid to be bullied, by not taking actions against bullying.”
She also specifically cited a long-standing concern over the quality of high school math instruction.
Moreover, she stated that a handful of teachers should’ve left years ago, while acknowledging that her children have had some outstanding teachers.
I cannot express enough how crucial it is for every parent, alumni member, resident, and supporter to understand what the near future of our school and our town looks like if we don’t step in. Ragland High School matters. Our kids matter. Our community matters.
