Alim McNeill Secures a $97 Million Contract Extension With The Detroit Lions

Detroit Lions defensive tackle Alim McNeill has signed a 4-year contract extension worth $97 million, including $55 million guaranteed.

McNeill was in the last year of his contract with the Lions, which paid him $3.389 million in salary and bonuses for the season.

The athlete’s football journey began at Jesse O. Sanderson High School, where he excelled as both a linebacker and a running back.

He then progressed to play college football at the University of North Carolina from 2018 to 2020.

During his college career, he earned All-American honors from The Athletic and Pro Football Focus in recognition of his outstanding performance, ultimately declaring for the NFL draft in 2021.

With the contract extension, McNeill aims to solidify his role as a defender and further support the Lions’ success.

Detroit Lions Turn to Alim McNeill, Motivated by New Contract, as Injuries Hit Their Defensive Line

The Detroit Lions selected McNeill, 26, as the 72nd overall pick in the third round of the 2021 NFL draft.

Through his impressive play, Alim McNeill earned a lucrative contract extension with the Lions.

As a result, the contract ranks him among the league’s highest-paid defensive linemen annually, with only three players earning a higher salary annually.

The high-value deal arises amid the challenges faced by the Detroit Lions’ defensive line.

Aidan Hutchinson, the top defensive end, broke his leg on Sunday, and the team placed him on injured reserve on Tuesday.

Likewise, the Lions put defensive tackle Kyle Peko on injured reserve because of a torn pectoral muscle.

At the start of the season, defensive end Marcus Davenport tore his triceps and is expected to miss the rest of the year.

With the key players sidelined, the Lions rely on Alim McNeill, who is now driven by the new agreement.

Consequently, with a new deal in place, the Detroit Lions eagerly anticipate a strong start to the season.

Detroit’s record is 4-1 in week 6, and it recently won an impressive 47-9 over the Dallas Cowboys.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell stated on Monday,

So yeah, how much? A lot. And he’s one of those guys we’re going to lean on. He doesn’t have to be Superman, but we’ve got to get that out of him every week, and he’s got that ability. Played a heck of a game yesterday.

Therefore, his coach acknowledges his potential to enhance the team’s performance and believes his resilience will be essential as they confront challenges.

Despite Suffering a Knee Injury Last Year, McNeill Delivered an Exceptional Performance This Season

The footballer suffered a knee sprain on December 05 last year, leading the squad to place him on injured reserve.

His initial injury occurred when he collided his knees with his teammate Aidan Hutchinson on a pass rush.

The Lions’ coach indicated that his injury was more severe than initially assessed and that his absence would significantly impact the team.

Nevertheless, McNeill made his return on January 6, 2024, and delivered a remarkable performance.

Despite playing in 13 games, he recorded a career-high five sacks, alongside 10 quarterback hits and 32 tackles.

This season, McNeil has achieved a 79.8 grade, recording eight tackles and 2.5 sacks through five games for the 4-1 Lions.

In Case You Didn’t Know

  • In Week 8 of the 2023 season, he recorded two sacks, his first career multi-sack game, and a pass deflection in a 26–14 win over the Las Vegas Raiders.
  • Alim McNeill is the owner of a brand named The Dream Brand.
  • McNeill was the second defensive tackle selected in the 2021 NFL Draft, following Christian Barmore.
