Amanda Anisimova has always had a strong support system behind her, most notably her older sister, Maria Egge.
Maria had once pursued tennis herself but transitioned into a successful finance career while remaining one of Amanda’s biggest cheerleaders.
Maria Egge, about 14 years older than Amanda, also grew up playing tennis.
Their parents, Russian immigrants who moved to the U.S. for better opportunities, introduced both daughters to the sport.
Maria excelled in college tennis, playing for the University of Pennsylvania. During the 2006-2007 season, she made history as part of the first women’s doubles team from Penn to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
However, injuries cut her tennis career short, leading her to step away from the sport professionally.
If I was playing a tournament, Amanda would stand outside the fence of the court and mimic what I was doing. She had a little baby racket, and my parents said, ‘Right, we’ll take a shot at it.’

After leaving competitive tennis, Maria shifted her focus to academics and finance. She earned a degree in business and built an impressive career on Wall Street.

Today, she serves as a senior vice president at Loop Capital.
Despite their age difference, Maria and Amanda share a strong sisterly bond.
In a 2020 interview with The New York Times, Maria revealed how she encouraged their parents to take a different approach with Amanda’s tennis career than they had with hers.
She wanted Amanda to have a more balanced upbringing while still pursuing her dreams.
Especially in high school, I wanted to have a social life and didn’t have time for everything, so I often felt burned out and wanted to quit tennis.

Amanda Anisimova’s parents, Olga Anisimova and Konstantin Anisimov, moved to the United States from Russia to give their children better opportunities.
Her parents never played competitive tennis while growing up, but supported their children’s passion for sports. They worked in the finance and banking industries.
However, Konstantin acted as Amanda’s primary coach while she was a junior. Sadly, he passed away due to a heart attack at the age of 52 in his apartment.
His untimely passing in 2019 created one of the most challenging phases in Amanda’s life.
The tragic news came as a big shock to the Anisimova family, and Maria flew from New York City to be with her mother and sister during the difficult time.
Amanda credits her sister for being there through the tough times. Having her family by her side gave the tennis player strength and made things a lot easier.
This is obviously the hardest thing I’ve had to go through and the hardest thing that’s ever happened to me, and I don’t really talk about it with anyone. The only thing that has helped me is just playing tennis and being on the court. That’s what makes me happy, and I know it would make him happy, so that’s the way it is.

However, she took a break from professional tennis, citing mental health concerns and burnout, in May 2023. Her sister helped her overcome their father’s death and make a return to tennis stardom.
Maria became a supporting pillar and helped Amanda navigate the emotional toll. She provided emotional and practical guidance, restructuring her training to prioritize mental health and joy in the game.
Thus, it fueled Amanda’s triumphant return in January 2024, culminating in her 2025 Qatar Open title and a spot in her first-ever grand slam final at the 2025.
