The global taekwondo community is mourning the loss of Noreen Thackrey, a beloved athlete, coach, and mentor who passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at the age of 73, surrounded by family in the comfort of her home.
A warrior in every sense of the word, Noreen leaves behind a trailblazing legacy, one marked by history-making achievements and a spirit that motivated generations.
Noreen Thackrey Was A Champion Who Defied The Odds
Noreen Thackrey was a competitor and a force of nature.
After stepping away from the sport for over two decades, she returned to the mat at age 61, not only to compete, but to win.
In an extraordinary comeback, she became the first USA Taekwondo Poomsae athlete to win the World Championships, igniting hope and ambition for older athletes everywhere.
And she didn’t stop there.
Noreen went on to win three consecutive World Poomsae Championships, becoming the first-ever world champion from both the United States and the Pan American region in her category.
Her journey shattered age-related barriers and silenced doubters, proving that true champions are defined by will, not by the calendar.
While Noreen was admired for her accomplishments on the world stage, it was her unshakable positivity and compassion that left the most profound impact.
Known for her signature phrase, “Just Keep Kicking,” she encouraged everyone to persevere through their struggles, regardless of the circumstances.
She was a proud mother and grandmother, and her bond with her son, Tim, was one of the most inspiring family stories in taekwondo.
The two became the only mother-son duo in U.S. Olympic history to be named Athletes of the Year in any sport under the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee.
Tributes Pour In For The Beloved Soul
USA Taekwondo remembered Noreen as “an incredible martial artist, mentor, mother, grandmother, and friend.”
They praised her for bravely facing the effects of throat cancer treatment with the same grace and determination that marked her every competition.
She was remembered not only for her titles but for her belief in the human spirit, her devotion to her students, and her joy in uplifting others.
The organization wrote,
“Her spirit lives on in every athlete who steps onto the mat with intention, courage, and heart.”
