New Jersey: Bergen Catholic President’s Email Sparks Backlash After Handshake Line Incident

This article was last updated by on

A postgame handshake line has turned into a public dispute between two Catholic high school football programs, with accusations of intimidation, false narratives, and questions about sportsmanship spreading across social media.

The controversy started after Bergen Catholic’s loss to Central Catholic. According to a post shared by the account Top 25 Public HS Football, a fight broke out in the handshake line following the game. The account’s operator said Bergen Catholic president Brian Mahoney sent an email that morning pushing back on early reporting about the incident.

The President’s Email Sparks Debate

In the email, Mahoney reportedly included a photo showing players from both teams shaking hands, framing it as evidence the incident had been overstated. He also invoked the Catholic identity shared by both schools, saying that identity should show up not just in the classroom but in how players carry themselves on the field.

The Top 25 account pushed back hard on that framing. The post said a very different story emerged once the photo was examined more closely, though the writer declined to share any video of the alleged altercation, saying they did not want to cause further trouble for the player involved.

The post argued Mahoney was trying to protect his school’s image and accused him of using religious language to claim the moral high ground while allegedly not living up to it himself. The writer called on Mahoney to issue a public statement addressing whether the episode reflects a larger pattern at the school.

Commenters Split on Who Is in the Wrong

The comment section quickly filled up with people who disagreed with the framing of the original post. Several commenters who said they were connected to Bergen Catholic defended the school and the email itself, arguing there was nothing intimidating about it.

One commenter, Elizabeth Gillon, said the two teams had actually started forming the handshake line before coaches pulled their players back to avoid further conflict, and praised the football team’s conduct against what she called a disrespectful opponent.

Others focused specifically on the email itself. EM Silver and Jamie Delpome both said they saw no intimidation in Mahoney’s message, describing it as a respectful ask rather than a threat. Orlando Fontanez, who said he attended the game in person, argued that media coverage exaggerated what actually happened on the field, saying trash talk occurred but coaches on both sides kept things from escalating into a real brawl.

Longtime Bergen Catholic football observer John Hund said he could not recall a time when the team skipped the postgame handshake, even after difficult overtime losses to rival schools, and credited the athletic staff with monitoring the line closely for signs of trouble.

Not every response focused on defending one side. Angus Mackenzie noted that teams sometimes skip the handshake altogether after particularly intense games, arguing that can be a smarter way to keep tempers from boiling over.

Jay Rosenfeld suggested the entire debate points to a bigger structural issue, floating the idea that teams should shake hands before kickoff rather than after an emotionally charged game.

As of now, neither school has issued an additional public statement beyond what was included in the original post.
