On January 14, 2016, Romine signed a one-year, $900,000 contract with Detroit. Subsequently, this season began with a 16-5 loss against the Kansas City Royals as he pitched 0.2 innings in the 9th inning.

Moreover, Romine replaced Cameron Maybin after the demotion of Anthony Gose in center field for the first time in his career.
