Dominican baseball second baseman Ketel Marte’s wife, Elisa Guerrero, is the cousin of famous baseball player Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Ketel Marte went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday’s 4-1 win over the Chicago White Sox.
He opened up the scoring with a solo blast to right-center in the first inning.
Marte has homered three times over the last five games and has 15 hits in his previous 26 at-bats.
He currently owns a 1.032 OPS, which would sit third in all of baseball among qualified hitters behind Aaron Judge and Cal Raleigh.
During the match, Ketel broke down in tears on the field after a fan yelled derogatory comments about his mother, Elpidia Valdez, who died in a car accident in the Dominican Republic in 2017.
Manager Torey Lovullo put his arm around Marte near the mound during a pitching change in the bottom of the 7th inning.
Marte wiped tears from his eyes repeatedly during the half-inning. The incident angered teammates, including shortstop Geraldo Perdomo, who went on an expletive-laden rant in which he called for MLB to do more to police the behavior of fans.
Ketel declined to comment through a team spokesman following Arizona’s win.
