“With a heavy heart, I lost my best friend”: Wife Tracy Greenwell Pays Tribute to Late Boston Red Sox Legend Mike Greenwell, 62

Mike Greenwell, a former American left fielder in the MLB’s Boston Red Sox, passed away on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at an untimely age of 62 after a long battle with cancer, leaving his wife, kids, and loved ones devastated.

According to reports, Mike Greenwell was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, and despite his courageous battle, he couldn’t survive.

Tracy Greenwell, the longtime wife of Mike Greenwell, revealed that her husband, whom she regarded as her best friend, died in Boston.

She stated:

“With a heavy heart, I lost my best friend today, It was Mike’s time to be an angel. At 10:30 a.m. in Boston’s General Hospital. We are forever grateful for the life he has given us.”

Mike Greenwell and his wife, Tracy Greenwell, were married for decades and lived a happy and adventurous life, travelling to different places together.

Furthermore, Mike and Tracy were high school sweethearts and attended North Fort Myers High School.

Despite being the wife of a renowned former MLB star, Tracy Greenwell prefers to maintain a low profile and hasn’t shared much about her professional life.

However, Mike Greenwell and his longtime wife, Tracy Greenwell, dedicated their life running their own business in Alva, Florida.

Mike and Tracy Greenwell established 31 Produce & Mining Co., an 80-acre family-run farm in Alva, Florida, in 2009, offering more than just fresh fruits and vegetables.

The farm features a U-pick section, bakery, and Cracker Shack Café serving homemade favorites, along with a petting zoo and mining area where visitors can pan for gems and fossils.

Known for its friendly, family-oriented atmosphere, the Greenwells’ business combines agriculture, fun, and education, attracting both locals and tourists year-round.

Despite Mike’s passing, his wife Tracy continues to run their business and keep his legacy alive.

Mike Greenwell and his wife, Tracy Greenwell, raised thier two sons, Bo and Garrett, to be successful in their respective fields.

Furthermore, Bo and Garrett followed in their father Mike’s footsteps in sports and are both exceptional baseball players.

Bo Greenwell, born on October 15, 1988, in Fort Myers, Florida, is a former American professional baseball outfielder best known for his time in the Cleveland Indians organization.

Standing 6 feet tall and weighing 185 pounds, he batted and threw left-handed.

A graduate of Riverdale High School, Greenwell was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the sixth round of the 2007 MLB Draft.

Similarly, Bo began his professional career in 2007 with the Gulf Coast League Indians and went on to play for several affiliates, including the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, Lake County Captains, Kinston Indians, Carolina Mudcats, and Akron Aeros.

Over eight seasons from 2007 to 2014, he appeared in 531 minor league games, posting a .273 batting average with 25 home runs, 223 RBIs, and 68 stolen bases.

Known for his consistency at the plate and solid outfield defense, he earned recognition as a Midwest League Mid-Season All-Star in 2010 while playing for the Lake County Captains.

He was named South Atlantic League Player of the Week in 2014 with the Greenville Drive.

In 2014, Greenwell joined the Boston Red Sox organization, finishing his career with their Double-A affiliate, the Portland Sea Dogs. He was released on June 26, 2014, marking the end of his professional baseball journey.

Bo currently serves as the general contractor and builder at Big League Builders Inc., his late father, Mike’s, company.

Mike and Tracy’s younger son, Garrett Greenwell, played baseball at Oral Roberts University.

Prior to ORU, Garrett played at Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Florida, and helped Santa Fe to a No.2 Seed in the Florida Community College System Activities Association tournament in 2012.

Garrett also played at Riverdale HS in Fort Myers, Florida, where he was a three-time All-State athlete in both baseball and football and won the state championship during his sophomore season.

In addition to his wife, Tracy, and two sons, Bo and Garrett, Mike Greenwell is survived by his daughters-in-law, grandchildren, and the entire family.
