Recently, controversies erupted after a 12th-place Athlete won Gold at the 2025 Taekwondo Nationals.
The 2025 Taekwondo National Championship was a series of events organized by the USA Taekwondo and the AAU Taekwondo that focused on experience, competition, and camaraderie.
As per the reports, the main event was the USATKD National Championships in Ontario, California, from July 23 to July 27, 2025, and offered various divisions for athletes to compete in Olympic sparring and poomsae.
According to the USA Taekwondo’s Facebook page, registration was open until July 1, 2025.
Coaches And Parents Spoke Out After A 12th-place Athlete Was Added To The Finals
The 2025 USA Taekwondo Nationals has just finished, but one event has left players, coaches, audiences, and the entire Taekwondo community in shock.
In the Male Youth Black Belt Poomsae division, something controversial happened that has never been seen before.
Normally, only the top 8 athletes from the semifinal round move on to the finals. But this year, an athlete who placed 12th in the semifinals was added to the finals, and then went on to win the gold medal.
Coaches were called for a quick meeting and told that 9 athletes would be competing in the finals instead of 8.
When the Coaches questioned, the referee said there was a “triggering error” during that athlete’s earlier performance.
But no one saw anything go wrong at the time, and no explanation or video evidence was given.
Coaches who asked more questions were told it was “not up for discussion.” One referee even said, “Then he will win gold by default,” before walking away.
Moreover, the athlete who was added to the finals, his father, was seen arguing with officials at the referee table.
Some believed the change was made because of that incident, not because of any error.
When the finals started, the added athlete went first and got a very high score. Later, he was announced as the gold medalist, and many people in the audience booed.
Following the event, the athlete’s family posted online, accusing people of booing a young kid and threatening to report them.
Megan Yi, a resident of Los Angeles, California, took to his Facebook handle and said the year’s championship was a huge step backward for USA Taekwondo Poomsae. He added,
What happened at Nationals this year was a huge step backward for USA Taekwondo Poomsae. We, as coaches and athletes, are used to losing…it’s part of competition…we train harder and try again . But when the rules suddenly change mid-competition to favor one athlete, we lose faith in the system itself. This wasn’t just disappointing—it was disgraceful. Coaches and parents— I encourage you to speak up! If we want change, these things need to be said & shared.

Other social media users took to the comment section and poured their dissatisfaction with the decision. Hamelth Villalobos said anyone involved in adding a ninth player to the final should be investigated. He added,
Anyone involved in the decision to add a ninth player to the final 8 should be thoroughly investigated and held accountable. Equipment error on the first athlete should have immediately been addressed. On top of that, deleting the Ring cam video on youtube?? The board of directors at USAT must issue a full investigation to ensure anyone responsible for unfair play is handled appropriately. Judges have a duty to uphold the integrity and fairness of the sport, otherwise it undermines the entire competition.

On the other hand, Dan Bodel, who works at Dialog Fitzroy, said that the athletes’ parents should be investigated. He wrote,
Investigate the parents, this is corruption that needs to be exposed.

- The team trial for the Under-21 USA Taekwondo Championships was held on Thursday, July 2, 2025. The winners of each division will qualify to represent USATKD in the Under-21 World Championships held in 2025 in KYORUGI.
- According to the event organizers, standard weigh-ins were set to apply unless an athlete registers in both junior and U21 or Senior and U21 divisions. In such cases, alternative weigh-in times were made available to ensure smooth participation.
