Gary Gritton, a beloved teacher, coach, and athletic director from Danville, Illinois, has passed away unexpectedly.

While the exact cause of death has not been publicly shared, the impact of his passing is being felt across Danville and beyond.

Gary Gritton Was Regarded As One of the Best Teachers At DHS!

Gary Gritton was born and raised in Danville. He graduated from Oakwood High School and spent his entire life serving the same community.

He worked at Danville High School for 24 years, where he served as a teacher, coach, and later as the athletic director.

On the field, he mentored athletes with fairness and care, helping them grow not just in sports but in life.

As athletic director, he led the Viking athletic program with integrity and vision.

His dedication to students and his leadership made him a pillar of the school.

The Danville community is heartbroken over Gary’s passing, with tributes pouring in from former students, colleagues, and residents.

One of his students shared a heartfelt note, saying:

Rip Gary Gritton you were a good coach, athletic director, and most importantly a good teacher as well as a good guy to work with, my prayers are with you and your family.

The DHS class of 2005 reunion shared,

For those of you who knew him well as the DHS athletic director or earlier in his career as a coach,Gary Gritton passed away yesterday suddenly. Prayers for his family during this trying time are needed while we grieve a kind soul gone too soon.

Gary is survived by his loving wife, Meridith Gritton, three children, and an extended family.

Funeral arrangements will be announced soon by his family. Until then, the community continues to hold his family in prayer.
