Despite facing academic and personal challenges, including his father’s passing, Darnell secured a scholarship to Tulane University.
After completing his college career, the Chicago Bears selected the wide receiver with the 173rd pick in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL draft.

Hence, he signed a four-year rookie contract with the team on July 21.
In his NFL debut, a 27–23 victory over the Detroit Lions, Mooney caught three passes from Mitchell Trubisky for 38 yards.
Darnell Mooney’s Father Passed Away When He Was In Junior High
Larry Mooney was more than just a father; he was a mentor and a source of inspiration for Darnell.
A native of Chicago, Larry worked as a computer technician and was deeply passionate about his family.

Whether it was playing video games with Darnell and his twin brother, Denzel, or cruising around the city with Home Run Inn Pizza in hand, Larry created lasting memories for his children.
Unfortunately, life took a heartbreaking turn when Larry was diagnosed with leukemia.
He passed away in July 2014, during Darnell’s junior year of high school.
Losing his father at such a critical stage forced Darnell to mature quickly.

Reflecting on this loss, Mooney shared,
To honor his father’s memory, Mooney wore a pendant containing Larry’s ashes during his first two NFL seasons.

He says, “I feel like he’s with me at all times.“
His father’s influence still remains a guiding light for the wide receiver.
In 2020, Darnell honored his father by supporting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through the NFL’s “My Cause My Cleats” initiative.
The cleats were auctioned off, with proceeds going to cancer research.
