Ayo Dosunmu was born in Chicago on January 17, 2000, to Nigerian immigrant parents, Jamarra and Quam Dosunmu.

His father, Quam, who had a passion for sports, played basketball and baseball during his time at Kenwood Academy.

He was also a die-hard supporter of the Chicago White Sox during the South Side Hit Men period and never missed a Chicago Bears game.

Dosunmu’s early exposure to sports, including following his father to games and watching him play, fueled his passion for basketball.

Dosunmu started polishing his basketball abilities at Westinghouse College Prep in Chicago, where his potential began to blossom.

In October 2017, he committed to playing college basketball. His talents caught the basketball world’s attention, leading to an invitation to the USA Basketball Men’s U18 National Team training camp in May 2018.

Dosunmu’s exceptional performance was crucial to the team’s triumph, culminating in a gold medal victory at the 2018 FIBA Under-18 Americas Championship.

During his collegiate career at the University of Illinois, Dosunmu achieved remarkable success.

He earned recognition as a consensus first-team All-American and received the prestigious Bob Cousy Award as the nation’s top point guard.

On April 6, 2021, Dosunmu announced his decision to enter the 2021 NBA draft, concluding his impressive three-year tenure with Illinois.

In the draft, he was selected by the Chicago Bulls with the 38th overall pick, fulfilling his dream of playing professional basketball with his hometown team.

Ayo Dosunmu grew up in Chicago, Illinois, U.S., with his parents and three siblings, two sisters and one brother.

Dosunma’s parents were Nigerian immigrants and had Yoruba descendants in his family. His name, Ayo, also means “joy” in the Yoruba language.

Ayo’s father, Quam Dosunmu, also grew up in America. He was an active athlete, and during his time at school, he played basketball and baseball at Kenwood Academy.

He was also a big fan of the South Side Hit Men era of the White Sox and never missed a Bears game.

Quam didn’t pursue his career in basketball and worked as a UPS manager for many years.

However, when he found out his kids wanted to become basketball players, he left his job and focused on his kids’s basketball journey and closely monitored his development.

On the other hand, Ayo’s mother, whose profession lies in the beauty industry, operates her salon, Salon Seven, in South Loop, Chicago.

Despite her busy schedule, she actively supports her son’s basketball career.

Dosunmu is fortunate to have unwavering support from his family, who stands by him every step of the way.

His success on the basketball court resonates deeply with his entire family, who feel a strong connection to his achievements and those of the resurgent Bulls.

Ayo Dosunmu Grew Up With Three Siblings

Ayo grew up with three older siblings, one brother, and two sisters.

His older brother  Yakub, also known as Kube, was born on August 24, 1999, and two older sisters, Joselynn, the eldest sibling, and Khadijat.

Kube showed early signs of interest in basketball but eventually chose a different passion.

Despite choosing different career paths, Dosunmu’s siblings play an important role in his life, offering unwavering encouragement and support as he pursues his dreams on the basketball court.
