MMA legend B.J. Penn, once revered as a two-division UFC champion and Hall of Famer, is making headlines for all the wrong reasons once again.
The former fighter, now 46, was recently arrested in Hawaii on charges of family abuse, adding to a growing list of concerning incidents that have surrounded his personal life in recent years.
Penn’s downfall has become a painful saga for fans, many of whom now fear for his well-being.
B.J. Penn’s Disturbing Arrest Was Captured On Camera
B.J. Penn posted a now-viral Instagram video showing his arrest, where he is seen lying in bed, surrounded by several police officers.
He repeatedly asks why he’s being arrested, to which officers respond: “harassment.”
According to official arrest records, Penn was charged with “abuse of a family or household member: offensive physical contact.”
He was released on a $2,000 bail and is expected to appear in court on Tuesday, May 27.
The video is accompanied by rambling captions in which Penn alleges that federal agents have replaced his mother, two brothers, and cousin.
Moreover, he also accuses his high school girlfriend of stealing from him during the incident.
He Has Made Claims Of Conspiracies And Impersonation To His Girlfriend
In recent months, Penn has gone on long social media tirades, insisting that his family has been infiltrated by government actors trying to steal the “Penn family fortune.”
He even claimed that his former opponent, Brendan Schaub, is among the impersonators.
In one particularly alarming statement, Penn wrote:
“My girlfriend of three years is taking money from political evil to spy, film, and A.I. me to take me out of the race, so I can’t help the next generation.”
He added:
“They take off my driver side door handle… and keep throwing agents at me left and right.”
The bizarre nature of these allegations has intensified public concern about Penn’s mental health.
B.J. Penn Was Accused Of Abuse From His Former Partner
Much of Penn’s ongoing turmoil also stems from a disturbing history of abuse claims from his former long-term partner, Shealen Uaiwa, the mother of his two daughters.
Uaiwa filed for a temporary restraining order in October 2020, which was later extended through 2021.
In her detailed affidavit, she alleged verbal, physical, and sexual abuse spanning a decade.
She claimed the former UFC fighter verbally menaced her in front of their children, threatened to kill her family, and attempted to force her to engage in unwanted sexual acts.
In addition, she alleges that he struggles with long-term substance abuse, including cocaine use, and tries to wrestle her and take her phone during a domestic incident.
One alarming claim came from their 11-year-old daughter, who reportedly told her mother she would “rather jump off our balcony than hang out with her father.”
Penn has denied the allegations, and although he has not been criminally charged in connection with Uaiwa’s claims, the court denied his legal team’s request to seal the proceedings.
He was, however, ordered to stay 100 feet away from Uaiwa, although he was later granted supervised visitation with their children.
Once celebrated for his fearless performances inside the Octagon, Penn’s public image has been overshadowed by erratic behavior, disturbing accusations, and legal trouble.
Since his retirement following a 2019 loss to Clay Guida, Penn has become a frequent fixture in bar altercations across Hawaii, and now, in troubling domestic disputes.
Despite never marrying, Penn’s relationship with Shealen Uaiwa was significant, and the abuse claims have added layers of complexity to his already tumultuous personal life.
