A beloved teacher, coach, husband, and father, Chad Fleming, passed away on Thursday morning, September 25, 2025.
Chad Fleming is survived by his wife, Jen Fleming, a math specialist at Mystic River Magnet School, and their two children, Melanie Elizabeth Fleming and Adam Fleming.
His daughter, Melanie, is a senior at Fitch High School.
A top 25 student in her class, Melanie is also a National Honor Society member, secretary of the Keyettes Club, and a student representative to the Groton Board of Education.
Besides her academic achievement, she is also a talented cellist and a competitive dancer.
A Bronze & Silver Award Girl Scout, Melanie, is headed to UConn this fall to major in marketing.

Chad Fleming was an 8th-grade English teacher at Groton Middle School, where he was known for his ability to inspire students.
Chad didn’t just teach literature and grammar; he encouraged his students to believe in themselves and pursue their dreams.
Outside of teaching, Chad was a devoted coach for multiple sports teams in Groton. He believed coaching was about more than just winning games.
Chad was also a key figure in the Groton/Mystic Basketball Club. He was part of a group of parents who helped build the program, providing young athletes with opportunities to learn and compete.
Likewise, he also volunteered countless hours to support youth basketball.
A Meal Train has been organized to provide meals for Jen, Melanie, and Adam in the coming months, and donations are being collected to help with unexpected costs.

MzAtherton AthertonTingz, a bus driver for the town of Groton, shared a heartfelt post on September 25, 2025. She expressed profound grief and shock over Chad’s passing, writing:

As a bus driver who takes great pride in her job, MzAtherton emphasizes the genuine, unconditional love she has for the children she drives, including Chad’s son, Adam, whom she affectionately calls one of her “babies.”
Although Adam has moved on to another bus, she fondly recalls how he always waved and greeted her when she drove by his neighborhood. She wrote:
