Basketball Coach Michael Hicks Death at 63 Leaves a Lasting Impact on Ottawa, Illinois Community

Marquette Academy basketball coach Michael Hicks, also known as Mike, has passed away, leaving behind a legacy of over three decades of coaching to his family and the Ottawa, Illinois, community.

Before starting his coaching career, Mike held several jobs, including working as a paperboy.

He began his basketball coaching with the YMCA Youth Basketball Program.

Following his time at the YMCA, he worked for multiple programs in different locations, including Wallace, Midland, LaMoille, and Peru, Washington.

Later, he was appointed athletic director at St. Anne’s, which eventually led him to positions at St. Mary’s and St. Viator.

With over 30 years in his coaching career, Mike retired in 2023, leaving behind a life with his family and an inspiring impact on countless youths.

Even after retirement, Mike stayed involved in basketball, coaching the freshman team at Marquette High School to support his great-nephew

Ottawa, Illinois, Mourns the Loss of Beloved Coach Mike Hicks!

Mike Hicks passed away on November 28, 2025, in Ottawa, IL. He was also known for his devotion to family.

He cared for his mother, helping with daily tasks and ensuring her comfort.

Mike was affectionately called “Uncle Santa” by his nieces and nephews for his thoughtful gift-giving.

He leaves behind his mother, his siblings Steve, Kathy, and Laurie, and his nieces and nephews Erica, Michelle, Lacey, Brandi, Stephanie, Lauren, and Abby.

While his passing was indeed unexpected and has brought grief to the Hicks family, his death has also caused a moment of mourning in the community.

Following his passing, Marquette Academy High School Go Club shared a heartfelt post offering prayers for his family.

In the post, many expressed their support and sympathy. One person wrote in the comments:

The most animated, vocal, intense and submerged into the game coach. Thank you for your dedication to the game and most importantly to our players. Our son learned lessons from you for the court and for life. Rest easy Coach and may God continue to Bless all who love you through this difficult time

Following Mike’s loss, many have felt that a part of themselves is missing and continue to hold his coaching, impact, and kindness in their hearts.

As of now, his funeral details have not been revealed by the family, as they are still grieving his passing.
