The talented guard, Darryn Peterson, was born to his supportive parents, Darryl Peterson II and Natatia Peterson, who have always had his back since his early days.

Darryn comes from a family where basketball has always been a big part of life since his father, Darryl Peterson II, was a high school basketball player at Western Hills in Cincinnati between 1997 and 2001.

After high school, he went on to play college ball at the University of Akron from 2001 to 2006.

Fast forward to these days, Darryl stays close to basketball through his son’s journey.

He has been involved as an assistant coach at some of Darryn’s high school stops, like Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy and Huntington Prep.

Similarly, Darryl has also stepped into the entrepreneurial world. He is the CEO and director of Ohio Phenom Academy Sports/Apparel.

He also travels and lives with Darryn during parts of his prep career, such as when Darryn was at Prolific Prep in California, showing how hands-on he remains.

In fact, the entire family has made several sacrifices, like moving across states for better competition and opportunities to help Darryn chase his dreams.

Darryn’s dad has spoken publicly about these choices in interviews, like with the Beacon Journal and On3. He explained how decisions to transfer schools were mainly about facing top national talent and preparing for college, even if it involved big changes.

He has been vocal about the fact that the family has always prioritized his growth.

Darryn has always been grateful for what his parents have done for his better future at the cost of their comfort.

To honor his father and his sacrifices, Darryn wears number 22 at Kansas because his father also wore the same number in high school.

Darryn’s Mother, Natatia Peterson, Is a Certified Doula and Childbirth Educator!

Unlike father, Darryn’s mother, Nataia Peterson, doesn’t belong to the sports fraternity.

That said, Natalia has established a sound career for herself as an Ohio Board of Nursing State Certified Doula and midwife.

She provides education on childbirth, prenatal care, postpartum care, and more.

Now and then, she keeps adding skills. In May 2025, Natalia got her Lactation Counselor certification. She became a certified prenatal yoga instructor in June 2024.
