Marc posted a photo of his wedding band alongside his bride, a fellow scholar whose intellectual brilliance and passion for social justice mirror his own.

Melissa describes herself as a hard laugher, loving spitfire, weepy empath, and 90s hip-hop emcee wannabe.

She was born to scholar-activist parents, a Boricua mother from New Jersey and an African-American father from Harlem. She grew up immersed in conversations about racial justice and systemic oppression.

Melissa is a sociologist, professor, Fulbright scholar, and writer whose work explores race, urban inequality, and global racial justice.

Melissa Valle Gave Birth To Mau Mau Prematurely

Melissa M. Valle and Marc Lamont Hill have welcomed their newborn son, Malcolm Kamau, into the world.

She shared the joyful yet unexpected news on social media, revealing that their baby arrived ten days before his due date on April 10.

Melissa was excited and surprised at their little one’s early arrival. She affectionately nicknamed him “Mau Mau.”

Malcolm Kamau is our quiet warrior, our teacher, our rebel who has traversed from womb to the world on his own time, in his own special way. My heart is bursting with a love supreme, while it is also heavy as we wait anxiously for the day when Mau Mau can leave the NICU and be home with [Marc and I]. These are beautiful and difficult days, and I ask for all of your patience and grace as we navigate what it means to be a #NICUmom and #NICUdad.

She had initially planned to reveal her pregnancy through carefully curated babymoon photos during a trip to Los Angeles. Her maternity shoot was scheduled for April 15.

She planned to keep it a secret until she felt well into her third trimester, but life had other plans.

At just 29 weeks pregnant, the scholar-activist experienced a shocking turn of events while shopping at Target.

I was minding my business by myself in Target on Thursday, at 29 weeks, looking at bathing suits for this babymoon, when SPLASH (just like on TV). My water broke—-Preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM).

Furthermore, Marc has largely kept his personal life out of the spotlight.

However, it has been reported that he has a daughter from a previous relationship, though her name, age, and mother’s identity remain private.

He opened up about co-parenting his first child while balancing a demanding career in a 2012 interview with Ebony.

I’ve been fortunate enough to co-parent my daughter in healthy and functional ways. It shows there are multiple ways to raise a healthy child. Because my schedule is demanding, my daughter’s mother has been flexible, and I’m grateful for that. I’m sure my daughter has been to more TV studios and lectures than she’d have liked to be, but even those moments create opportunities to bond with her, and that means everything.
