Daniel was a man of many talents and profound generosity.

He was recognized as a “Renaissance Man,” and his passions were wide-ranging. He was a singer in an a cappella group, a golfer, and an Eagle Scout in his high school.

Moreover, he earned his pilot’s license and celebrated his 18th birthday by skydiving with his mother.

Daniel was a Business School Ambassador at Baylor University and even starred in a university commercial. He also prepared feasts as a skilled cook for his fraternity, Phi Kappa Chi.

Furthermore, Daniel was known for his faith and his desire to serve others. He dedicated his time to mentoring young people through the Young Life program.

He lovingly played guitar for the Special Friends Fellowship Club, led a small group at Harris Creek Church in Waco, and served as a greeter at Eastside Community Church in Dallas.

A Life Well-Lived: John Daniel Russell’s 23-Year Adventure

John Daniel Russell, the son of John and Beverly Russell, was born on November 6, 2002, in Memphis, Tennessee. His parents raised him in a close-knit family alongside his sister, Lillian Grace Russell.

He was a young man of extraordinary character, profound faith, and insatiable curiosity. Sadly, he passed away at the age of 23.

Daniel was a scholar with a bright future. His beautiful smile, genuine joy, and constant deference to others made him a delight to all who knew him.

He lived more in his 23 years than most do in a lifetime. He was an intrepid explorer and visited over 40 countries, meticulously planning ambitious itineraries for friends and family.

His adventures included climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro with his sister, golfing at world-renowned courses with his father, and backpacking through Patagonia and Glacier National Park with his cousin and friends.

He had a gift for creating unforgettable experiences, from witnessing an active volcano to snorkeling between tectonic plates in Iceland.

Similarly, he relished cooking for others at home, generously sharing his talents through fabulous smoked brisket, homemade breads, and desserts with his grateful family.

Daniel is survived by his heartbroken parents, John and Beverly; his beloved sister and best friend, Lilly; his grandmothers, Alice Starnes Bolton and Jeanne Newman Russell; and a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins who cherished him.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, John Everett “Jack” Bolton and John Morris Russell, Senior.

Daniel was a man of unshakable faith who had read the entire Bible and attributed his joyful expression to his love for Jesus.

He was a faithful member of the Church of the Holy Communion, where his spirit was nurtured. He possessed a rare gift for meaningful conversation, asking thoughtful questions and listening with deep, sincere interest.

The Russell family will hold a funeral service on Saturday, November 22, at 2:30 p.m. at Church of the Holy Communion, 4645 Walnut Grove Road, Memphis, TN.

A reception will follow in the parish hall.

Instead of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Daniel’s memory to the Baylor University Hankamer Business School need-based scholarship fund or to the Recover Food Feed Hope ministry at Church of the Holy Communion.

Rest In Peace, John Daniel Russell.
