Beloved El Paso Basketball Coach Paul Baca Passed Away At 55 Due To Undisclosed Cause

The El Paso basketball community is mourning the loss of Paul Baca, a longtime coach who recently passed away.

His passing on Wednesday has begun a wave of condolences and fond memories from his former players, fellow coaches, and friends.

Baca, who was only 55 years old, influenced the sport in El Paso, Texas.

Baca’s career included coaching the Americas High School girls’ basketball team and serving as an assistant coach for the Socorro High School boys’ team.

His passing has been confirmed by Socorro High School authorities and Socorro Independent School District (SISD) authorities.

Those who knew Baca described him as more than just a coach and teacher; he was fearless and treated his team like family.

His caring nature made him feel like family to many of those he coached.

Social media is filled with condolence and sympathy, with many saying they are grateful for Baca’s guidance and support.

One of his students wrote down an emotional message:-

“I am in true disbelief at the moment… it’s always scary opening up social medias now a days cus you never know who will pass unexpectedly 😔 Paul Baca, you were an absolute gem of a teacher and coach. I am truly thankful and honored to say you were my math teacher. No one could have done it better like you. Cheers to you 🍻 see you on the other side.
Rest in paradise Mr. Baca 🕊️”

Paul Baca’s Love Of Basketball Showed Through In His Dedication To His Teams

Native El Pasoan Paul Baca graduated from Cathedral High School in 1988.

He developed his passion for math at Southern Methodist University (SMU), which helped him start his career as a teacher and coach for the Socorro Independent School District.

Most recently, he served as the assistant coach of varsity boys’ basketball at Socorro High School for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 years.

Baca previously made a name for himself as the head coach of the girls’ basketball team at Americas High School.

While at Americas, Baca coached talented players like Tammy Acosta, Teisha King, and Ola Akomolafe.

His coaching brought much success to the team, especially in the 2006-07 season, which was one of his finest.

The team had 26 victories and beat Amarillo Tascosa in the UIL playoffs that season.

The 2007-08 squad won a solid 30 games the following year and beat Lubbock Monterey in the playoffs.

The 2008-09 squad won 23 games and beat Amarillo Tascosa again in the playoffs.

A highlight of his career was during the 2005-06 season when the team made it to the Sweet 16 and beat North Crowley in the regional quarterfinals.

In the previous two seasons, Baca assisted former UTEP men’s basketball player Omar Thomas at Socorro.

Paul Baca’s Death Has Sent Shockwaves Through The El Paso Coaching Community

Several coaches in the area have gone to social media to offer condolences to Baca’s family, remembering him as an excellent coach, good friend, and even better person.

Teisha King, a Baca former player and now head coach at Americas High School, said the team would honor Baca on Monday evening, February 10, before their home playoff match against Canutillo.

The 6 p.m. game was a chance to honor Baca’s lasting legacy with the team and its members.

King looked back on her playing days for Baca and said-;

“My time at Americas was a great time and helped shape me as a player and coach. Coach Baca helped me a great deal and always was there for guidance.”

Her words express what many who were lucky enough to know and learn from Coach Baca feel.

Paul Baca’s impact went far beyond the basketball court. He taught values and lessons that his players will carry for the rest of their lives.

The El Paso basketball community will remember him as a coach, mentor, and friend for years to come.
