The Belvidere School District and the broader community mourn the heartbreaking loss of Andy Werhane, a dedicated educator, technology coach, and beloved golf coach at Belvidere High School.
Andy tragically passed away on April 26, 2025, after collapsing while working on a project at his home. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
His death has created a deep emptiness for his family, friends, students, and coworkers.
Andy was a loving and committed husband and father, having married Sarah Werhane on November 12, 2011.
Sarah, originally from Algonquin, Illinois, has been the Head of Office and Financial Operations at City Side Farms, LLC, since January 2022.
Together, they built a loving home and raised two beautiful children: their daughter Olivia and son James.
Sarah shared a deeply emotional message on social media following Andy’s passing:
“It feels unreal to be typing this and sharing it via social media – but I know that news travels quickly, and I’d like as much of that news as possible to come from me rather than the grapevine.

He was a fantastic person, teacher, father, and friend. He was also, without a shred of exaggeration, the love of my lifetime.
In the meantime, here’s a song that sure meant a lot to Andy Werhane – and that captures just the tiniest sliver of what I’m feeling today.”
Andy Werhane Began His Career In Education With Passion And A Deep Sense Of Purpose
After graduating from Eastern Illinois University in 2006 with a Bachelor’s degree in English/Language Arts Teacher Education, he joined Belvidere School District 100 in August 2007 as a high school English teacher.
He made a quick and noticeable impact, not only in the classroom but also in the entire school community.
In 2016, he moved into a leadership role as an Instructional Coach for Technology, where he worked to improve teaching practices and integrate technology into classrooms.
His dedication to professional growth led him to complete a Master of Arts in Educational Technology Leadership from Concordia University Chicago and, later, a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership—Principal Preparation from Aurora University.

In August 2023, Andy became the Assistant Principal, continuing to influence students and staff with calm leadership, compassion, and vision.
Outside the classroom, Andy made a lasting mark through coaching.
He led Belvidere High School’s girls’ bowling and golf teams and was twice named Athletic Coach of the Year in 2018 and 2019.
His colleagues also recognized him with the 2018 “Great Debaters Healthy Conflict” Award and the 2019 Leadership Award — evidence of his ability to inspire and unite those around him.
Andy Werhane’s Death Has Sent Waves Of Grief Through Belvidere
Natalie Michelle Wooden, a close family friend and former private teacher to Olivia, wrote:
“I’ve had the absolute blessing of knowing him and his family for several years. They were one of my first supporters when I branched out with my business and became their daughters’ private teacher. The Werhane’s are AMAZING and loving people and I literally adore them. To say I was utterly shocked when I read the news is an understatement. My heart is shattered, not just myself, but for his friends, family, former students and most importantly his wife, daughter and son whom I’ve had the experience of getting to know on a personal level. If you wouldn’t mind just taking a moment to think of them or pray for them in this heartbreaking time, I’m sure they would greatly appreciate it. ❤️”
