Only a few days back, Tennessee lost their running backs coach, Jerry Mack, for the same position to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The veteran coach has previously worked with Louisville, Georgia Tech, and Texas.

This will be Brian’s second stint with Michigan, with his first stint being in 2020 for one season. According to The Michigan Insider’s Sam Webb, Brian will also be the Wolverines’ defensive run game coordinator.

Brian Jean-Mary Wikipedia & Age

Brian Jean-Mary, 48, a former player of the game, starred for Appalachian State in the late 90s. A native of Apopka, Florida, Jean-Mary graduated in 1998 and began his coaching journey as a graduate assistant at Louisville.

After spending one season at Louisville, Brian joined Lou Holtz at South Carolina and stayed there for two seasons as a defensive graduate assistant.

Brian joined North Alabama in 2003 as their defensive backs coach and helped the Lions to the Gulf South Conference title and a semifinal berth at the 2003 NCAA Division II playoffs.

After proving himself at North Alabama, Jean-Mary joined Georgia Tech as their linebackers coach and spent six seasons with them. During his tenure, Brian was able to build one of the most consistent defenses in the country.

His team ranked in the nation’s top 30 in rushing defense, total defense, and scoring defense. In his final season, Brian led the side to an ACC Championship victory over Clemson and an appearance in the 2010 FedEx Orange Bowl.

Partnership With Charlie Strong

Brian returned to Louisville in the 2010 season, but this team, he was their assistant head coach/linebackers coach. The linebackers coach arrived at Lousiville during the same time as the appointment of Charlie Strong.

With Charlie as their head coach, Louisville amassed a 37-15 record in four seasons and won a pair of Big East Conference Championships. Brian followed Charlie to Texas in 2014.

The linebackers coach was interviewed by the Texas website after his hiring. When asked why he chose Texas, Brian answered it was too hard to turn down the opportunity to coach such a historical team.

The interviewer also asked what made Charlie such a strong coach. Brian gave a one-word answer and said, “Consistency.” He added that Strong is a hands-on coach and is fundamentally sound.

But the duo couldn’t replicate their magic at Lousiville in Texas. Texas fired Charlie in 2016, and Jean-Mary followed him to the USF. At USF, Brian was able to bring the best out of the player in the first season.

The team ranked in the top 25 in six categories. But the magic didn’t last long at USF, as Charlie and Brian were fired in 2019. Jean-Mary and Strong’s partnership ended as  Jean-Mary joined Michigan, and Charlie joined Alabama.

Jean-Mary’s Time At Michigan And Tennessee

The linebackers coach joined the Michigan football team in 2020. He only spent one season with the Wolverines.

Despite spending only one season with the Wolverines, Brian had a substantial impact. He was instrumental in recruiting the four-star linebacker Junior Colson and Jaydon Hood and the three-star cornerback Ja’Den McBurrows.

Before saying goodbye to Michigan joining Tennessee, Brian was interviewed by the Jacksonville Jaguars. If he had joined the Jaguars, he would’ve been reunited with Charlie Strong, but that didn’t happen.

Instead, Charlie joined the University of Tennessee. In his three seasons with the Tennessee Volunteers, the side ranked in the top 30 in the FBS twice.

During his time in Tennessee, Jean-Mary was also able to prove that he could handle players with bad attitudes and get the best out of them. In 2023, Brian recruited four-star players, LB Arion Carter, EDGE Caleb-Herring, and TE Ethan Davis.
