Brooklyn Nets Shooting Guard Cam Thomas Was Raised In a Single Parent Household by His Mother Leslie Thomas!

This article was last updated by on

Cam Thomas was born to parents Dale MacMillan and Leslie Thomas on October 13, 2025, in Yokosuka, Japan.

Behind his successful career lies his parents’ support, most particularly, his mother, Leslie Thomas, who has been a towering figure in his life.

Leslie, an army veteran, has been his biggest cheerer since day one in every step of his life.

Born and raised on Virginia’s coast, Leslie was a basketball player herself during her middle and high school years.

Leslie enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1990, serving four years across stations like Fort Jackson, South Carolina; Daegu, South Korea; and Fort Riley, Kansas.

It was during her time stationed in Yokosuka, Japan, that Leslie gave birth to Cam. After leaving the Army at the rank of E4 to care for her oldest daughter, Shaniece Collins, Leslie raised her children as a single parent.

Her military background brought structure to their household, which Cam Thomas credits for his success.

Leslie’s passion for the sport didn’t end with her playing days; it carried over into her role as Thomas’ first coach and biggest supporter.

She coached her son in his younger days. The mother and son grew a sound bond over their little basketball training sessions when Thomas would shoot and Leslie would rebound for him.

Leslie always made sure that his shooting skills improved over time.

Whereas, his father was absent throughout his childhood. Little is known about Dale beyond his name.

Cam Thomas Attributes His Successful Career to His Mother, Leslie, Saying, “She means the world to me!”

Leslie’s struggles as a single mother weren’t abstract to Cam Thomas; he acknowledged her sacrifices to make what he is today.

She means the world to me,” he has said, crediting her for every milestone, from his SEC-leading 23 points per game as an LSU freshman to his selection as the 27th overall pick by the Nets in 2021.

In interviews, Cam Thomas has spoken glowingly about his mother’s impact. He told The Undefeated,

My mom has instilled work ethic, discipline. Being in the military, she preaches discipline all the time.

She emphasized fundamentals, telling him, “Free throws are free,” a mantra that stuck with him as he honed his scoring skills.

Leslie’s influence went beyond the court. She moved to Baton Rouge during Cam Thomas’s lone season at LSU and provided him with home-cooked meals and a familiar presence as he transitioned to college basketball.

She refused to outsource his training to private coaches and took on the role herself.

Her coaching was meticulous and demanding. Leslie implemented a “10-in-a-row” rule: Cam couldn’t use a new move in a game until he perfected it by making 10 consecutive shots in practice.

Thomas also acknowledged that his mother’s training sessions were of great help through his school and college years.

Leslie had been nothing but extremely proud of her son when he got drafted in the NBA.

On draft night, as they sat together in the green room at Barclays Center, Leslie’s pride was evident. “I love my son so much,” she told The Undefeated.
