Phil Hughes, the head football coach at Canyon High School in Anaheim, California, has officially resigned from his position, citing a desire to spend more time with his family.

His decision to step down reflects a personal choice to prioritize family life after years of dedicated service to the school’s athletic program.

While he has not announced any new professional plans, Hughes highlighted that his immediate focus will be on reconnecting with loved ones and enjoying a more balanced lifestyle.

Principal Brent McKee expressed gratitude for Hughes’s dedication, stating,

We thank Coach Hughes for his four years of dedication and hard work. We fully support his decision to prioritize his family and wish him the absolute best in his future endeavors.

His departure marks the end of a meaningful chapter for Canyon High School football.

However, many in the community hope he will remain involved in youth sports or mentoring in some capacity.

Phil Hughes Served As Assistant Coach and Defensive Coordinator!

Hughes served as Canyon High School’s head coach for four seasons, from 2022 through 2025.

He was hired as Canyon’s head football coach in February 2022, succeeding Josh Waybright, who stepped down after one season due to health issues following a car accident.

Over his four-year tenure at Canyon, Hughes compiled a 17-25 overall record, highlighted by a 9-3 campaign in 2023, which tied the school record for most wins in a season.

Even in his final season of 2025, despite a 3-7 overall record, Canyon managed a 2-1 league finish, resulting in a three-way tie for first place in the North Hills League.

Prior to taking the helm at Canyon, he spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at Sunny Hills High School in Fullerton, California, from 2015 to 2021.

During his tenure, the team posted a 17-25 record with a standout 2023 season in which Canyon went 9-3.

Moreover, his most notable achievement came in 2019, when Sunny Hills captured the CIF-SS Division 8 championship.

After these years of dedicated coaching and commitment, Hil has chosen to step away to focus on family.

His decision to step away from the sidelines reflects a choice to prioritize family over football.
