Matthew J. Brown, 51, died November 14 after being struck by a vehicle on Peters Road. He coached Carroll Spirit’s 4th-grade boys and had returned this season to spend more time with his son, Alex.

Deputies and Tipp City medics responded at approximately 6:26 a.m. to Peters Road, between West Evanston and Michaels.

Investigators say a southbound vehicle crossed the center line and struck two people walking southbound.

Brown, of Monroe Township, was pronounced dead at the scene. A second pedestrian was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Brown is survived by his wife Ellen, sons Logan and Alex, his parents Jim and Becky Brown, his brother Anthony, and a large extended family.

Authorities say the evidence so far does not indicate impairment; the investigation is ongoing.

Matthew Brown Remembered for Dedication to Kids and Basketball

Carroll Spirit paid tribute to Brown’s energy and commitment. “He loved kids, and he loved basketball,” the program said, noting Brown had come back to coach alongside his son. Friends and parents said the same thing in their own words.

Brown is survived by his wife Ellen, sons Logan and Alex, his parents Jim and Becky Brown, his brother Anthony, and a large extended family.

“I’ve been trying to process this all day. He was a great one,” Charlie Amlin wrote. Marcus Newell added, “Man, that’s awful. What a great man. Prayers for his family.”

Former players made it personal: “He was truly the best. He always believed in us. RIP Coach Brown,” Aaron Fields II posted. Tony Ortiz kept it simple: “We will miss you Matt.”

College friends and teammates remembered Brown’s energy. “Awesome guy. We were friends in college. So sorry,” Casey Matteson wrote.

“We were roommates for orientation and then managers for our sports,” Tim Ahner remembered. “Great guy who will be missed,” Scott Blair added.

Many comments emphasized Brown’s role as a mentor. “He was an inspiration and incredible coach to our son,” Melissa Fields wrote. “He always offered sound advice,” Courtney Snow said.

Parents and neighbors sent prayers and condolences: “My deepest condolences. May Matthew rest in eternal peace,” Ron Beavers wrote. “Prayers for the family,” repeated across dozens of posts.

Wright State issued a statement saying it was saddened by the loss of Matthew, son of longtime coach and broadcaster Jim Brown, and extended condolences to the family and university community.

Brown is survived by his wife Ellen, sons Logan and Alex, his parents Jim and Becky Brown, his brother Anthony, and a large extended family.

A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 22, at St. Christopher Catholic Church in Vandalia.

Visitation is set for Friday, November 21, from 4–7 p.m. Arrangements are with Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home.

The family requests that donations be made to the Carroll Spirit Basketball program instead of sending flowers.

This community remembers Matthew for his constant motion, his whistle that could gather a room, and the way he poured himself into kids.

“So sad. Praying for Coach’s family,” Braedon Norman wrote. Those words and many like them are how people are keeping him close right now.
