Central Texas mourned the loss of beloved high school football coach Mike Shields, who passed away on July 15, 2025, leaving a lasting impact beyond the game.
After a courageous battle with multiple myeloma, a rare form of bone marrow cancer, Coach Shields left behind a legacy of positivity, faith, and inspiration.
He was known for connecting with players, students, and communities, embodying resilience and dedication.
Mike Shields Was Well-Known For High School Football In Central Texas
His coaching journey began in 1996 at Bishop Louis Reicher Catholic High School, where he was also a 1996 graduate.
Over his 28-year career, he amassed an impressive record of 140 wins and 106 losses, with 13 playoff appearances.
Shields coached at Bishop Reicher and later at McGregor High School from 2019 to 2024, leaving an indelible mark on both programs.
In June 2025, he returned to Bishop Reicher as the athletic director and head football coach, a role he saw as the culmination of his career.
Shields’ coaching wasn’t just about strategy or wins.
He was a mentor who shaped young men with lessons in character, teamwork, and perseverance.
His teams didn’t just play football—they learned how to face life’s challenges with courage and humility.
Diagnosed with multiple myeloma in August 2023, Shields faced his illness with the same grit he brought to the sidelines.
Even as the cancer took its toll, he continued coaching, leading with faith and optimism.
In early July 2025, a serious setback landed him in the ICU for nearly two weeks.
A GoFundMe campaign, launched on July 9 by close family friends, raised over $11,000 of its $14,000 goal to support his family during this difficult time.
Despite the challenges, Shields remained a beacon of hope, concealing his daily struggles to focus on those around him.
Off the field, Mike Shields was a devoted husband to his wife, Maria, and a loving father to his children, Sierra, Colton, and Parker.
“His family was his world,” said Johnny Jones, a former player, in a heartfelt tribute. “He made sure they knew it every single day.”
Shields’ love extended to his players and community, where he was known for his quiet strength and unwavering support.
Whether offering advice, sharing a laugh, or simply being present, he had a gift for making everyone feel valued.
Ryan Landon, who played under Shields in 1997 and reconnected with him in 2025, shared a touching memory:
“we began chatting like we had been hanging out everyday since “97”. We only spent a couple weeks together before he was forced back in the hospital. In that time it felt like he did amazing things. I appreciate Coach Shields and the impact he’s had to so many.”

Ryan Landon added,
“Coach, I know you’ll be leading your Cougars out of the tunnel this fall and we will do everything we can to be another shining example of all that you taught & coached on and off the field. I’d like to send condolences to the Shields Family. I’m very sorry for your loss. Coach, I know you’re flying high now and I appreciate the short amount of time we had together. Wish it could’ve been much longer.”
