The Champaign, Illinois, community is heartbroken over the loss of young Colton Deedrich, deeply impacting all who knew him.
Born in 2020 to loving parents Andrew and Erica Deedrich, Colton was a bright, joyful five-year-old boy whose smile and deep love for baseball made him a cherished part of his family and local community.
Colton grew up alongside his older brother, Hudson Deedrich, a young baseball player who shared countless moments on the field and at home with his little brother.
The two brothers were often seen together, with Hudson’s passion for the game rubbing off on Colton, who embraced it with the same enthusiasm despite his young age.
Their father, Andrew, was actively involved in local baseball through the Tolono Park District, where the family had become an integral part of the tight-knit community.
The Tolono Park District shared the devastating news in a heartfelt announcement, expressing the profound sorrow felt by so many:
“The Tolono Park District community is heartbroken by the loss of Colton Deedrich. Colton and his dad were part of our park district family through baseball, and his joyful spirit, bright smile, and love of the game will always be remembered. We extend our deepest condolences to his parents, Andrew and Erica, his brother Hudson, and all who loved him. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Deedrich family during this incredibly difficult time. Tonight, we join our community in lighting a candle in Colton’s memory—standing together in love, support, and remembrance. Rest easy, Colton. You will always be part of our park district family.”

In the final days of his life, Colton’s mother, Erica J. Deedrich, turned to her Facebook community in the Beyond Able group to share an update that moved many to tears while highlighting her extraordinary strength and selflessness amid unimaginable grief.
She wrote:
“I just wanted to post in here and thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for all the prayers we have felt over the last five days. Our sweet baby has gone to be with Jesus. In true Colton fashion he is doing something amazing for at least two other families. He is providing a Christmas miracle for a family in Alabama that will get his heart and a family in Georgia that will get his liver. Please pray for our family as we say goodbye to him tonight. Pray for the surgeons and the transport team and everyone involved that his organs can get to these people and give them the best Christmas present ever!!”

Even in the face of losing their youngest child, the Deedrich family chose to honor Colton’s legacy through organ donation, allowing his heart and liver to bring renewed life and hope to others during the holiday season.
This act of generosity amid profound personal tragedy touched countless people and underscored Colton’s giving spirit, even at such a tender age.
Friends, family, and acquaintances poured out their love and support online and in person.
Photographer Josephine Leonard, who had captured precious moments of Hudson and Colton together, shared a poignant tribute alongside one of those cherished photos:
“Please pray for this family and sweet clients of mine. The loss of a child is unimaginable. Precious Colton. There are no words big enough for this kind of grief, but there is love — endless, fierce, everlasting love. His life mattered. His name matters and the bond between them never disappears, even when the world changes forever. Send them strength as they navigate each day with courage none of us should ever have to find. I’ll miss those silly giggles during our shoots, but I’m sure Jesus is hearing those laughs now. Love you Deedrich family.”

Katie Builta wrote of the family’s fight and faith:
“Please pray for Colton. My sister Debbie Brewer Deedrich’s grandson is intubated and fighting for his life. God has moved mountains for him already but we need for him to have brain activity and wake up. He is a fighter but we need the power of prayer.”

Penny Shinholster added her admiration:
“Praying for this family and admiring Colton’s mother’s courage and strength to be able to help others in the midst of her loss. May God continue to comfort and strengthen their hearts during this most difficult time. As a mother my heart aches. Colton is free from his illness and is present with the Lord.”

The Colton Deedrich death has reminded the Champaign-area community of the fragility of life and the power of love, faith, and community support.
While words can never fully ease the pain of losing such a young, vibrant soul, the outpouring of prayers, candles lit in his memory, and lives now touched by his gifts serve as a testament to the lasting impact Colton had in his short time here.
The Deedrich family, Andrew, Erica, and Hudson, continue to be held in the hearts of many as they navigate this profound loss.
May they find comfort in the memories of Colton’s giggles, his love for baseball, and the enduring bond he shared with his brother and all who knew him.
Rest in peace, sweet Colton.
