Clayton Murphy | Early Life, Education, And Parents

Clayton Murphy was born in Greenville, Ohio, United States, to supporting parents Mark Murphy and Melinda Murphy.

His father, Mark, was a former basketball coach who wanted him to lead his team in Ohio State Championship. But something else was destined for him.

Aside from his parents, he grew up with his brother Wesley Murphy. Besides, Clayton and his brother had an average childhood rather than a lavish one.

Like any other farm boy, Murphy looked after his pigs and other animals. Similarly, his father once mentioned that Clayton is very good at pig selling and running.

From a very early age, Murphy had a great interest in sports. However, his main journey started after he joined Tri-Village High School.

He also played soccer, field and track, and basketball in high school, but later, the  American athlete chose running as a career.

Talking about Le LaBadie, he is a coach who spotted Murphy in the 2011 Ohio cross-country meet. He felt Murphy had great potential, and if trained properly, he could make the nation proud.

Soon after, LaBadie and Murphy started to work together, resulting in Clayton’s steady progress. From there, his actual journey as a professional runner started.

After completing high school, he joined The University of Akron, where he trained with the Akron Zips college team. Later, Clayton won the mile run and was runner-up over 3000 meters. 

Similarly, in 2014, Clayton finished fourth at the MAC Cross Country Championships. He ran a personal best of 4:00.39 minutes for the indoor mile run in February.

The mid-distance runner placed 4th place at Mid-American Conference Championships in Cross Country and 20th place at the 2015 NCCA Division I Great Lakes Region Cross Country Championships. 

2016 was the year that changed his life forever. From there, he started to participate in international games. Clayton bagged a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, an outstanding achievement.

He finished first at the 2017 USATF 1 Mile Road Championships. Unfortunately, Murphy didn’t start in the 800 meters final after suffering an injury in the 1500 meters final. 

Moreover, Murphy won the 2020 Olympic Trails 800 m in 1:43.17 to make his second Olympic team. 

On March 17, 2022, he turned in a stellar performance in the men’s 800 m run, earning the bronze medal in his first international championships in Rio de Janeiro.
