William Christopher “Dabo” Swinney, better known as Dabo Swinney, married his high school sweetheart, now wife, Kathleen Swinney, on July 9, 1994. The childhood sweethearts are proud parents of three children.

Kathleen was born on March 27, 1971, in Bowling Green, Ohio, to her parents, Jeffrey Bassett and Bette Bassett. She has three siblings: Ann Cicero, Lisa Lamb, and Daniel Bassett.

She is a successful individual in her own right. Katheleen is an educator and philanthropist who has participated in several cancer awareness programs.

Life hasn’t been easy for the Clemson coach, but Kathleen has always held the light for him.

Swinney overcame a difficult upbringing as his father battled alcoholism, and it was Kathleen who stuck with him throughout his adversity.

Unlike Swinney, Kathleen came from a well-to-do family, and all of her family had PhD and Master’s degrees, while he came from a broken household with financial struggles.

Swinney is more than grateful for her constant support and attributes Kathleen to the person and coach he has become today.

Football Coach Dabo Swinney and His Wife, Kathleen, Have Been Together Since Their Elementary School!

Dabo Swinney and Kathleen have known each other for a long time. They fancied each other from the very first. “We always kind of liked each other,” Kathleen said in an interview.

They graduated from the University of Alabama and earned graduate degrees together. Kathleen earned her degree in education, and Swinney earned her degree in business administration.

Their love story goes back to the elementary school where they grew up in Pelham, Alabama. Kathleen was in the first grade while he was in the second grade.

In fact, Swinney’s elder brother dated Kathleen’s elder sister, and they hung out very often.

Later, in sixth grade, Dabo asked her out; however, he later suggested they just be friends because he had a lot on his plate then. That said, they remained on good terms.

It wasn’t until their high school days that he felt he was ready. He then proposed to her in his junior year, and the rest is history.

The head coach asked Kathleen to marry him on August 10, 1993. Eventually, the childhood sweethearts walked down the aisle in 1994.

They are proud parents of three sons, Clay, Will, and Drew Swinney. All three have followed their father’s footsteps in the sports industry.

Will played as a wide receiver and holder for the Clemson Tigers from 2017 to 2021. He reportedly had several other offers, including Western Carolina, Newberry, and Elon. However, he chose Clemson as his preferred walk-on.

Although it was most obvious for Will to choose Clemson, he doesn’t want the privilege of being Swinney’s son and wants to be treated like any other player.

Drew is currently an offensive player development coach and the assistant wide receivers coach for the Clemson Tigers.

Clay played collegiate football for the Clemson Tigers. Now, he is the Development Marketing Manager at Pavilion Development Company.

Kathleen was an elementary school teacher for four years while moonlighting at Shelton State Community College.

She took time off from school on maternity leave when she became pregnant with Will, thinking she’d join again.

However, fate had different plans for her when, nine months later, she got pregnant with their second son, Drew. Hence, the Swinney brothers, Will and Drew, are 17 months apart.

Kathleen Swinney’s Sister’s Battle Inspires Her Advocacy for Breast Cancer Research!

Kathleen’s drive to advocate for cancer is because of personal experiences. Her sister, Lisa Lamb, spent her entire life battling cancer.

Motivated by her sister Lisa’s battle and her own experience with the BRCA gene, Swinnet proactively underwent a double mastectomy to reduce her own cancer risk.

Through Dabo’s All In Team Foundation, she has helped raise significant funds, contributing over $2.25 million to breast cancer prevention and research by the end of 2024.

Swinney and the foundation host major fundraisers, such as the annual Dabo Swinney Ladies Clinic and the Tigers for Ta Tas campaign.
