He was deeply involved in the Benjamin Russell High School Wildcat family and spent his career shaping young athletes.

Born to parents Thurston and Minnie Lee Harris, Coach Gary Jackson Powell was deeply involved in coaching at Benjamin Russell High School in Alexander City, Alabama.
He was a legend on and off the field, dedicating his career to shaping student-athletes.
While details about his personal playing career are limited, his impact as a coach was undeniable.
He was known for his passion for the game and support for the Wildcat family.
Beyond coaching, Powell loved spending time outdoors, watching sports, cracking jokes, and enjoying life with his wife and family.
He was married to Bonnie Powell for over 60 years, and together they had two children, Jack and Alisa, who sadly passed before him.
Powell’s legacy continues through his grandchildren, Christyn Simmons, Caity Parsons, Courtney Crumpton, and Alex Crumpton, as well as his great-grandchildren, Ryder and Sadie Simmons, and Langston and Lainey Parsons.
His passing left a void in the hearts of his family and the whole community. Many people have shared heartfelt tributes to Coach Powell since his passing.
His former student expressed their sadness and said:
He was a great coach to many people over the years. I know he will be missed by many. My prayers and thoughts go out to all the family.
Additionally, one of his well-wishers remembered him as a bright light and said:
So sad to hear of Gary’s passing. Worked with Bonnie at the City a few years. She spoke quite often of Gary and her family. Such a bright light, and always smiling ….. Will be in our thoughts and prayers.
His Celebration of Life service will be held on May 21, 2025, at the Benjamin Russell High School Auditorium.
Additionally, his family has encouraged attendees to wear Wildcat gear or colors in his honor.
