A beloved husband, father, son, and coach, Steven James Myers, passed away on September 24, 2025, battling leukemia, at the age of 50, at his home in Wheeling, West Virginia.

A lifelong Wheeling resident, Steven James Myers, is survived by his wife, Betsy, and their children, Grace, Gabby, and Luke.

He leaves behind his parents, Steve and Carol Myers; his sister, Melissa Myers-Penhos; his father-in-law, Dick Hawkins; his sister-in-law, Jen Kloss; his brother-in-law, Matt Hawkins; and extended family members.

Myers was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Karen Hawkins, and brother-in-law, Al Kloss.

Steve had gone to a baseball game in Cleveland with his wife and children to celebrate his son Luke’s 21st birthday. They watched their favorite team, the Atlanta Braves, win the final game of a three-game series.

Sadly, about a week after the game, Steve was diagnosed with leukemia.

Likewise, just days before his passing, Myers left a hospital in Columbus, Ohio, to attend his daughter Grace’s wedding at their home on September 22, 2025.

Born on February 22, 1975, Myers was a standout athlete at Wheeling Park High School and later at West Liberty State College.

As a catcher, he earned a reputation as one of the best in the Ohio Valley.

He also played football and helped Wheeling Park reach the 1991 West Virginia state championship game with a notable long touchdown run against Mount View.

Myers’ love for sports extended to coaching. He served as an assistant baseball coach at Wheeling Park from 2006 to 2011 and later became head coach from 2019 to 2025.

Under his leadership, the team achieved a strong 110-61 record, won Ohio Valley Athletic Conference titles in 2021 and 2023, and reached the state tournament in 2019.

Thanks to his contributions, Myers was named the 2021 OVAC Coach of the Year.

He took great pride in watching his players grow and succeed beyond high school. He also coached the Ohio Valley Mudcats and served as an assistant golf coach at Wheeling Park, where he taught.

Myers enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, and talking about his family.

Friends are invited to pay their respects on Friday, September 26, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and on Saturday, September 27, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at Kepner Funeral Homes, located at 166 Kruger Street, Wheeling, WV 26003.

A celebration of Myers’ life will take place on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at 3 p.m. at the JB Chambers Performing Arts Center, 1976 Park View Road, Wheeling, WV 26003. Services and burial will be held privately for the family.

During this ordeal, we pray for the strength of James Myers’s wife, kids, and extended family.

Rest Easy, Coach Steven James Myers!
