Werner Lorant was seriously ill for a year and a half and passed away on April 20, 2025, at the age of 76 in Wasserburg am Inn.

He was a German football player and a manager who managed TSV 1860 Munich for nine years between 1992 and 2001.

After separating from his wife, Doris Lorant, Werner lived with his girlfriend Brigitte and his dog Jackson in Waging am See. His tragic demise saddened the whole football community.

Werner began playing football professionally with Westfalia Herne’s second division in 1970 and moved to Borussia Dortmund in 1971.

Similarly, he played for Rot-Weiss Essen and 1. FC Saarbrücken before spending his next four-and-a-half years with Eintracht Frankfurt. He won the 1980 UEFA Cup and the 1981 DFB-Pokal.

Werner played for FC Schalke 04 and Hannover 96 before starting his coaching career in 1982. He coached SV Heidingsfeld from 1984 to 1986 and 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 from 1986 to 1990.

Likewise, he coached Viktoria Aschaffenburg and led them to the championship in 1992.

TSV 1860 Munich, a club in the third division, hired him, and he led his team to the first division within two years. His club qualified for the UEFA Cup in 1997 and the Champions League in 2000.

Moreover, he coached SpVgg Unterhaching, LR Ahlen, Fenerbahçe, Kasımpaşa, Sivasspor, Kayseri Erciyesspor, APOEL, Saipa Teheran, Incheon United, Liaoning Hongyun, and DAC Dunajská Streda.

He departed, battling a serious illness for a year and a half, and left a lasting legacy in the sport he loved.

Despite Werner’s training as a painter and decorator, his skill as a professional football player was evident from an early age.

He made his mark first as a player before transitioning into a successful managerial career. However, his nine-year tenure as manager of TSV 1860 Munich cemented his place in football history.

Under his leadership, the club experienced some of its most memorable moments, including promotion to the Bundesliga.

He was a charismatic leader at the club, earning respect and admiration for his fiery temperament, tactical acumen, and deep connection with the fans.

Werner was married for 30 years to his wife, Doris Lorant. Unfortunately, the married couple separated after the forced eviction of their villa in Oberdorfen, where they had lived for almost 20 years.

He was 62 years old at the time of the split.

After separating, Werner found companionship with his girlfriend Brigitte and his beloved dog Jackson. He spent his later years in the tranquil surroundings of Waging am See with them.

His girlfriend and siblings survive him. The Lorant family will soon announce the respected coach’s funeral and memorial service to close friends and extended family.
