Cody Garbrandt, an American professional mixed martial artist, frequently discusses his parents and attributes their influence on his fighting career.

The UFC Bantamweight Champion Cody Ray Allen Garbrandt was born on July 7, 1991, in Uhrichsville, Ohio, United States, to parents John Meese and Jessica Enos.

Cody Garbrandt and his elder brother, Zach, were raised by their mother Jessica after their parents’ divorce following a domestic abuse incident when Cody was just one year old and his brother, Zach, who is 10 months older than him, was two.

Furthermore, Cody Garbrandt’s addicted father, John Meese, got violent with his mother Jessica Enos and hit her. That’s when she thought she couldn’t save him from his problems, and she decided to leave him.

When Cody Garbrandt was 10 years old, his mother’s ex-husband, Mark, adopted him and his brother and supported them in their fighting career.

While Cody Garbrandt’s father, John Meese, was absent in most of his career and personal journey, his mother, Jessica, remained by his side as his constant supporter.

He often credits his mother with instilling humility and determination in him, which shaped his athletic career, and appreciates Jessica’s struggle and dedication in guiding his fighting career.

Cody Garbrandt’s Father, John Meese, Had A Deeply Troubled Past

Cody’s biological father, John Meese, grew up in a violent environment in a small, rural town and was exposed to drugs and violence from an early age.

His father, John, along with his uncles Bob and Mike, grew up going to bars with their father as young as 13, watching him fight people and shoot at their cars when they fled.

Furthermore, John also witnessed his father go home drunk and beat his mom. Growing up in such an environment, he himself became an alcoholic and drug addict.

With his problematic behaviour, John Meese eventually land in prisoon for serious crimes, incldung adbuction, rape, and numerous charges of domestic violence.

His life spiraled out of control, and his relationship with his wife and kids fell apart.

Despite John’s absence, his legacy continued to haunt Cody. The emotional scars left by his father’s addiction and abuse remained a driving force in Cody’s life.

Growing up, Cody had a complicated view of his father, struggling with feelings of anger and confusion.

He resented John for his behavior and the damage he caused, but he also couldn’t hate him entirely because he didn’t truly know him.

For Cody, fighting wasn’t just about competition—it was a way to break free from the toxic cycle of violence that his father represented.

He wanted to escape the anger and rage that came from his father’s actions, to prove that he was different.

In many ways, his pursuit of a career in combat sports was his attempt to forge a new identity, one untainted by the legacy of his father’s crimes and addiction.
