Dane Dunning | Early Life

Starting with the utmost fact, Dane Dunning was born on December 20, 1994, to his parents, John Dunning and Misu Dunning, in Orange Park, Florida. He grew up playing with his brother Jack Dunning who is six years older than him.

Dane Dunning as a young kid

Dane is specifically half-Korean and half-American as he was born to a Korean mother, Misu. Not only that, he even looked like a Korean as a kid.

We can also see the mother-son duo posing together cheerfully, doing the Korean heart sign.

Well, nothing much has been revealed about his early days and his parents on the infobahn, but certainly, we can talk about his older brother, Jake Dunning.

Following his older brother, Jake’s footsteps

Dane is personally a huge fan of Jake. Not to mention, Jake remained a baseball player for San Francisco Giants, Chicago White Sox, and Long Island Ducks. He spent almost a decade in the MLB and served as a pitcher.

Before that, Jake attended Indiana University and played college baseball for Indiana Hoosiers Baseball.

Interestingly, he is the only pitcher who gave up two grand slams. He took retirement and decided to end his playing career on July 12, 2018.

Dane never received a reasonable chance to play alongside his brother, but he could attend the training with his brother when he was picked up in the draft in the off-season.

His older brother

During the training, Dane crucially picked up every technique that Jake applied. He was constantly ongoing about how one should improve his mental side of the game.

Jake significantly took his guidelines straight to his heart. A player can only control what is under his control. The rest should not be worried about. Anything can happen precisely in the ongoing game.

Moreover, Dane always dreamed of playing with his brother for the same team. It would be the most incredible experience ever.

Dane said on ChicagoTribune, “That’s one of the biggest things when you get runners on, or it’s a tight situation, you still have to throw strikes. You still have to let your defense make plays.”

Dane Dunning | High School and College Career

He enrolled at Clay High School in Green Cove Springs, Florida. After graduating high school, Dane attended the University of Florida, where he played college baseball for the Florida Gators.

The Blue Jays selected him in the 34th round of the 2013 Draft. Not to mention, Robbie Thompson remained his coach for the high school.

Robbie addressed both Jack and Dane. Jack used to practice batting on the ground, whereas Dane used to shag flies. Dane was a skinny kid back then.

Dane got better and better in high school, playing with A.J. Puk, Alex Faedo, and Logan Shore. And talking about his performance in high school days, he had a rough first year, a mediocre sophomore season, and he worked out of the bullpen as a junior.

He forwent his senior season and was announced for the MLB draft. As per online sources, Dane was primarily used as a starter and reliever in college in Florida.

Dane Dunning | Professional Career

Washington Nationals

Dane was thrilled that he got picked in the MLB draft in 2016. The Washington Nationals selected Danning as the 28th overall pick in the first round.

He got selected but had to divide his first professional year between the Gulf Coast League Nationals and the Auburn Doubledays.

Either way, Dane was thrilled to be a starter for the Nationals. Being able to start was a dream come true for him.

Dane played eight games between both teams and made a combined 3-2 win-loss record and a 2.02 ERA.

Chicago White Sox

Dane was traded to Chicago White Sox on December 7, 2016, in place of Adam Eaton and a few other players.

He was assigned to play for the Kannapolis Intimidators for the upcoming season and later was upgraded to Winston-Salem Dash and the Birmingham Barons.

The mindset that Dane built after training with his brother became way more helpful to him. A right-hander was ranked no. 10 in the Sox organization. He was titled the Sox minor-league pitcher of the month for April.

As per Kannapolis Pitching coach Matt Zaleski, he was always set to stay in the attack mode.

Dane suffered from a torn ligament in his right elbow and underwent Tommy John surgery. And eventually, he missed the whole 2019 season. James Andrews performed his surgery.

So, here’s one of Dane’s Instagram posts that seems like this was during his surgery.

That was an adamant time for Dane. The whole year he was drowned in the thought of whether his arm was going to come back healthy and ready or not. He depended on his teammates and tried staying mentally strong.

Well, things went smoothly after that. Dane was called up for the active roster post and acquired his major MLB debut on August 19, 2020. For obvious reasons, he was excited and had butterflies in his stomach.

Texas Rangers

Dane was further traded to Texas Rangers on December 7, 2020, for the pitching.

Willing to Embrace Korean Culture

Dane was born to a Korean mother and an American father, making him half Korean and half American. Be that, and he wants to fully embrace the country’s culture where his mother was born. He wishes hard to play for the Korean National team.

If the opportunity crosses his way, Dane would love Korean teams even though he hasn’t been to South Korea. He loves Korean food and culture.
