Darius Garland was born on January 26, 2000, in Gary, Indiana, to his father, Winston Garland, a former professional basketball player, and mother, Felicia Garland.

He picked up his interest in basketball as a young kid after seeing his father playing in the NBA. He liked baseball, too, but later focused solely on basketball.

Garland scored his first basket in second grade.

Darius was so good at basketball that he played on the travel team against much older opponents and later joined AAU in Nashville because the local teams did not meet his standard.

After relocating to Nashville, Tennessee, in sixth grade, he attended Brentwood Academy.

He garnered Naismith Trophy High School All-American honorable mention recognition in March 2017.

After remarkable high school basketball, Darius entered the 2018-19 season as the best recruit in Vanderbilt’s history.
