David Andersen | Early Life, Family & Education

David Andersen was born in Melbourne, Australia, to parents Dany Andersen (Danish) and Mary Andersen (Australian). Stuart Andersen, Brett Andersen, Grant Andersen are the names of his siblings. 

At 11, he started playing basketball and joined his local basketball association Frankston Blues. His mother and brother have coached him since he started playing basketball.

His first team was Frankston Blues. After playing with his team, he led the team to win the under 12 championships as a junior. When he reached 15, he joined the senior Frankston blue men’s team.

After playing with Frankston, he got the opportunity to join the Australian Institute of Sports Basketball Development Program. Furthermore, he moved to Canberra and partnered with AIS. 

He joined the Ginninderra Secondary College. In addition, Andersen played some games for AIS from 1996-to 1998 and got the reward of  Australian Junior Male Basketballer of the Year.

He has played many games for the different countries’ leagues and NBA teams during his career from 1998-to 2021.

Australia & Italy 

After playing from the college, Andersen first signed with Wollongong Hawks in 1998-1999. It was also a part of the Australian National Basketball League.

He scored an average of 6.2 points and four rebounds per game. In 1999, he left the hawks and signed with Kinder Bologna of the Italian League. He signed a multi-year deal and helped Bologna win the Italian Cup. 

Andersen was nominated for the LBA All-Star Game. But unfortunately, the club went into bankruptcy, and he had to force himself to leave Bologna.

In June 2002, he got an overall pick of 37th in the 2002 NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks. Montepaschi Siena was the next team where he signed a deal for the season of 2003-2004. 

Moreover, he contributed a great play to the team and made the team qualify for the EuroLeague Final Four for the first time.

Russia 

In 2004, Andersen went to Russia and signed a two-year deal with CSKA Moscow in the Russian Basketball Super League. He was also named to the first team of the All-Euro League. 

But sadly, he had to face the dislocated ankle injury, fibula fractured and went to his home country Australia for Surgery in 2005-2006.

Specialist treatment and rehabilitation helped him recover fast, and he again went to Moscow to re-sign a deal with CSKA Moscow. This time, he helped the team win the Russian Super League and Euro League championship in 2007-2008.

Spain 

David Andersen signed a deal with Spanish Liga ACB, FC Barcelona, in June 2008. He helped his team win the 2008-2009 ACB season championship.

NBA 

After playing in various country leagues, he decided to play for the NBA teams for two years. 

On 14 July 2009, he was first drafted by the Atlanta Hawks. Later, the Hawks traded him to the Houston Rockets in exchange for future drafts and cash considerations and signed a multi-year deal with the Rockets.

He scored 19 points for international teams against the Los Angeles Lakers, winning over 101-91.

Similarly, on 28 July 2010, he was traded to the Toronto Raptors for a short period. New Orleans Hornets was his next team, where he got traded along with Marcus Banks and Jarrett Jack on 28 November 2010.

Then he returns to other countries to continue his career.

Italy & Turkey 

In Italy, David Andersen signed with Montepaschi Siena for a season contract of three years. He played some games and contributed his score to the team.

In August 2012, he got a massive buyout of 800,000 pounds and signed a contract with Fenerbahce of the Turkish Super League. At the end of 2013, he left the Fenerbahce team. 

France & Australia 

Andersen played many games with different teams and spent seven years in France and Australia.

In 2013-2014, he signed with SIG Strasbourg, and ASVEL Basket of the French LNB Pro A. ASVEL Basket was very grateful to Andersen for winning the championship of 2015-2016.

On 16 July 2016, he signed a two-year deal with Melbourne United and was named the team’s captain. But sadly, he again faced a knee injury for six weeks. 

Later Andersen helped united to win the championship against Adelaide 36ers and became the oldest player to win the NBL championship for the first time.

Between 2018-2021, he played for different teams and won many championships. Then he announced his retirement after playing 22 league/cup championships and 23 professional seasons.

National Team Career

Apart from the international seasons and leagues, he also represented his country many times. He played at the Albert Schweitzer Tournament in 1998 and was voted the most valuable tournament player.

He traveled to Portugal and Japan to play the tournament of FIBA Under-19 and the FIBA Under-21 championships for Junior Men.

In the off-season of 2003, he was selected by the Australian Boomers to play in the team and secured a place in the 2004 Summer Olympics.

Moreover, he participated in the 2005 and 2007 FIBA Oceania Championship and won gold medals representing Australia. But unfortunately, he had to miss the 2012 London Olympics due to injury. 

David Andersen averaged a score of 6.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.2 assists when he played for the Boomers in the 2014 FIBA World Cup. In addition, he took the Boomer for the fourth straight time in the finals in 2016. 

Post Playing Career

Andersen is now working for the National Basketball League and taking care of Player Liaison and special projects. He announced his retirement as a basketball player in October 2021.
