The American diver is an Olympian who has won several medals at the Olympics. David won a gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London for an individual 10m platform.

Likewise, he won a bronze medal for the synchronized 10m platform, partnering with Nicholas McCrory.

Boudia also grabbed a silver medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil for the synchronized 10m platform. He had partnered with Steel Johnson.

David Boudia – Early Life and Family

The national diver, David was born on April 24, 1989, in Abilene, Texas, United States. He was born to proud parents Jim Boudia and Sheilagh Boudia.

Likewise, David grew up with his two sisters Shauni Boudia and Shaila Boudia. He studied at Noblesville High School and graduated from there in 2007.

David Boudia – Diving Career

Boudia has been diving since 2000. The young diver made his way to the United States National Diving team in 2005 for the first time.  

Olympics

Boudia participated in the Olympics for the first time in 2008. He was named to the United States Olympic team that competed in swimming at 2008 Beijing.

Similarly, he competed for the 10m platform and synchronized the 10m platform, partnering with Thomas Finchum.

Boudia was named the 2008 U.S. Olympic team in the 10-meter platform and the synchronized 10-meter platform event with former synchro partner Thomas Finchum.

However, Boudia did not receive any significant feat in 2008 Beijing.

2012 Summer Olympics

Boudia represented the United States in 2012 London. He partnered with Nicholas McCrory for the men’s 10 m platform synchro. The duo scored 463.47 points and won third position.

Likewise, the Chinese and the Mexican divers received gold and silver, respectively, at the event.

Boudia also grabbed his first Olympics gold in 2012. He scored 568.65 points and stood at the first position.

Similarly, the Chinese and the British divers received silver and bronze at the event.

2016 Summer Olympics

Boudia also had the opportunity to represent the United States for the second and last time in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. He won two medals.

He competed in the 10 m platform synchro with his partner Steele Johnson.

Furthermore, the duo scored 457.11 points and won the silver medal. The Chinese and the British divers became first and third, respectively.

David Boudia – World Championships

Boudia has won several medals at the World Aquatic Championships. He is indeed a phenomenal diver.

2007 Melbourne

Boudia partnered with Thomas Finchum for the 10 m platform dive synchro at Melbourne’s 2007 World Aquatics Championship.

Likewise, the duo had 463.56 points and won the bronze medal.

2009 Rome

Boudia partnered with Thomas Finchum again for the 2009 World Aquatics Championship.

Moreover, the duo won a silver medal in the men’s 10 m platform five synchro with a score of 456.84.

2011 Shanghai

Boudia won a silver medal in the 2011 World Championship for men’s individual 10m platform. He scored 544.25 points.

2013 Barcelona

Similarly, Boudia won a silver medal at the 2013 World Championships held in Barcelona. He scored 517.40 points for the men’s individual 10m platform.

2015 Kazan

Boudia then again won a silver medal at the 2015 World Aquatics Championship held in Kazan. He scored 560.20 points.

2019 Gwangju

Boudia switched from 10 m to 3m for the World Aquatic Championship. He also made the decision owing to the concussion that he suffered from.

However, he could not win any medals and finished 5th in the 3 m springboard event.

David Boudia – Absence from 2020 Tokyo Olympics

Boudia initially unsure if he wants to return to the Olympics again after 2016 Rio de Janeiro or retire instead.

In fact, he opted for a break from international competitions in 2017.

Nonetheless, he decided to return in the fall of 2017 and prepare for his fourth Olympics. The gold he had won in 2012 London motivated him to win further golds.

However, he suffered from a concussion in February 2018. It happened because of an error in training that enabled him to crash into the water. He crashed very hard and also experienced blackout and dizziness.

But Boudia still had high hopes. He still went for the Olympics trials.

Not Qualified?

Boudia finished third at the United States Olympics trials for Tokyo 2020. He got there by a small margin of 5.5 points for the 3 m springboard.

Likewise, Boudia was the oldest diver to compete in the trials, and also it was his first time for the 3 m springboard.

He had prepared with his family in lockdown for the Olympics.

However, Boudia stated that he was still filled with joy despite not participating in the Olympics.

“I couldn’t help but leave the pool last night filled with joy. It’s easy to let yourself go down the path of things you could have done differently.”

He then added, 

“It’s good to learn from your mistakes, but dwelling on them will leave you discontent, and that is not how I want to end my fight this week. You have two choices in those moments, stay in defeat or move forward. I choose to move forward with joy & contentment!”

He also congratulated the divers that qualified for the 2020 Tokyo.

David Boudia – Drugs and Depression

The Olympics gold medalist David Boudia had a tough time with drugs and suicidal thoughts as a teen.

He smoked cigarettes and got into marijuana, and drank a lot regardless of time while at university. He even contemplated suicide.

Who would have imagined that an Olympian would have gone through this phase in his life? However, Boudia overcame all of these and established himself as a national hero when he won gold for the United States.

Today, he is a true Christian. He invoked faith that led him to become who he is today.

Boudia’s story is inspiring for youth who wants to get out of drug indulgence.
