During the National Deaf Cheerleading Championships in New York, Zella and her teammates from the Oklahoma School for the Deaf were placed in unsafe hotel conditions, separated from coaches, denied room keys, and even required to leave their door open at night.
The girls felt exposed and frightened, especially when strangers were seen pacing near their door.
When Zella tried to call her mother for emotional support, staff and directors repeatedly told her to hang up, even threatening to suspend her from competition if she didn’t comply.
The situation escalated when the Director of Student Life threatened Zella directly, saying she would not compete if she didn’t hang up on her mother.
The situation spiraled further when one cheerleader suffered a medical emergency, and staff admitted they didn’t know how to respond.
Other teammates, outraged by Zella’s punishment, declared they would not compete without her.
Overwhelmed, Zella eventually turned in her phone, but without a room key, she was left waiting outside her door until she suffered a panic attack, needing her mother’s guidance to calm down.
However, the punishment did not end there. In the aftermath, the school launched an investigation that forced Zella to apologize for supposedly “threatening” the Director of Student Life with her defeated “I dare you to“ response.
The superintendent later ruled that Zella would be suspended from future athletic events, barring her from track competitions that spring, then, again, from the first volleyball game of the new school year.
In short, although she was allowed to finish the cheer competition, she was punished twice afterward, suspended from both track and volleyball, for the same incident.

Oklahoma Cheerleader Suspended After Seeking Safety and Comfort From Her Mother!
Keri Traver posted on Facebook under the title “How my daughter was punished for wanting to talk to her MOM.
In her post, she carefully avoided naming other minors or adults, focusing only on her daughter Zella’s experience.
She expressed that this wasn’t about rule‑breaking but about her daughter seeking emotional support in a frightening environment.
She documented everything with recordings, screenshots, and hotel proof, appealed the punishment through meetings and emails, and even flew overnight to New York to protect her daughter.
Despite her efforts, the school refused to apologize or reverse its decision.
Furthermore, Keri emphasized that she wasn’t writing out of anger but out of a commitment to truth and accountability.
Her focus was on exposing neglect, demanding better treatment for children, and stressing that every child deserves safety, respect, and the right to reach their parents when scared or overwhelmed.
She concluded firmly:
I didn’t post this out of anger.
I posted this because the truth matters, and because every child deserves safety, protection, and respect from the adults responsible for them.
Our kids deserve better.
Zella deserved better.
And after months of silence, deleted messages, inconsistencies, and punishing her TWICE for the same incident…
I’m done being quiet.
People reacted strongly to Keri’s post, sharing their own points of view and outrage.
They shared their POV, highlighting their disbelief at how minors were treated, saying
My heart goes to all children. I just wish they hire us as mom hood and dad hood who know how to handle emotions trigger. I just can’t believe how they deal this situations and they could do way better than this!
Honestly I am such embarrassment how they deal this situation. Thank you for sharing this story and we all definitely need adjust this. I hate when they do “put all basic information situations under rug”. Definitely not find any solutions
I am glad you take action and be there. I would do same what you would do.
Some underlined their criticism of the school, saying:
Girl! This is definitely not okay!!! This is gotta be in the court or legal involved
Your daughter deserve a justice. They will continue to do other kids. This ends now. Im rooting for you and Zella!! Youre a mama

This case reflects a serious failure of responsibility and care by school authorities.
Instead of prioritizing the safety and emotional well‑being of their students, the Oklahoma School for the Deaf staff and administrators chose control, secrecy, and punishment.
