She specialized in the heptathlon and won gold at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, becoming the first European to win the Olympic heptathlon.

Following several injuries, Denise announced her retirement in 2005.

After her retirement, she started working as a pundit for BBC Sport’s athletics coverage and has covered some major events, including the Olympics and World Athletics Championships.
