    On February 7, 2017, Smith was named ACC rookie of the week by the officials, and it was his second time with honors.

    Smith entered the 2017 NBA Draft and was selected by the Dallas Mavericks. He entered into his rookie contract with the team on July 5, 2017. 

    Smith played six games for the Mavericks in Las Vegas and was very impressive in the game, which got him selected in the ALL-Summer first team. 

    On December 29, 2017, Smith scored a triple-double in the match against the New Orleans Pelicans. Smith was only 20 years old at the time. Hence he became the sixth youngest player in history to score a triple-double.

    Because of all his games and performances, Smith was selected to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team. 

    On January 31, 2019, Smith was exchanged to the New York Knicks. He played for the team for two years.

    On February 8, 2021, Smith was exchanged to the Detroit Pistons. He was with the team for around eight months before signing a deal with the Portland Trail Blazers.

    On February 16, 2022, Smith had a severe ligament injury in his elbow. He was out of the game for four weeks. After four days, Smith was released from the contract following the injury.
