Derek Shelton is happily married to his wife Alison Shelton, and they have three, all grown-up, beautiful children.

Derek, 52, is a professional baseball coach who was also a catcher back in the days he was active.
Currently, he is managing the Major League Baseball (MLB) team Pittsburgh Pirates which he joined in 2019.
Derek had baseball in his blood, as his father, Ron, was also a baseball coach. His interest in baseball was piqued when he received his first catcher equipment from his father at the age of three.
After playing a few high school and college games, he joined the New York Yankees as a minor-league catcher in 1992.
He played for a year, but his career ended abruptly due to an elbow injury. In a total of 46 games he played, he ended up with a batting average of .341 and 1 homerun.
In 1997, he started his coaching career with the Yankee minor league team and later won a championship with the Staten Island Yankees in 2002.
He started his major league hitting coach journey in 2005 when he managed the Cleveland Indians. He worked there for 4 years and joined Tampa Bay Rays’ in 2009.
The Rays lost their patience with him and fired him in 2016, after which he joined the Toronto Blue Jays as a quality control coach and later the Minnesota Twins as a bench coach in 2018.
Afterward, on November 27, 2019, he joined Pittsburgh Pirates. Recently his contract with them was extended on April 22, 2023.
