World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka made a touching gesture in response after winning the 2023 Madrid Open third round in honor of her sister’s wish.
The second seed, Sabalenka, advanced to the fourth round of the Madrid Open. She defeated Colombian wildcard Camila Osorio at the Caja Magica on Saturday, April 29.
Sabalenka upheld her promise to Tonechka, her younger sister, to introduce herself on video when she won.
Giving her sister a flying kiss, she expressed how much she loved and missed her.
“I promised my sister to say ‘Hi’ to her, so ‘Hi Tonya, I love you and I miss you’,” she said after the victory.
In addition to expressing her joy at victory, Sabalenka praised her rival, calling her a brilliant player who battled for every point.
“I’m happy with the win. She’s a great player and she fought for every point. It was a really great match,” Sabalenka added.
