Don Gullett wife, Cathy Gullett, had been married to the baseball player for 54 years. The two were teenagers when they tied the knot in 1970.

The Cincinnati Reds shared the story of Gullett’s demise as he passed away at age 73. The three-time World Series Champion pitcher, Gullett’s cause of death has not been revealed.

Drafted out of McKell High School, Gullett made his debut for the Cincinnati Reds a year later. He was part of the Reds team that won the first of their two back-to-back World Series titles. 

Gullett’s career ended at age 27 after a shoulder injury. The Reds inducted him into the Hall of Fame in 2002. The late baseball player spent the 90s and 2000s as a Reds coach. He spent the last 13 years as a bullpen and pitching coach before being fired in 2005.

Don Gullett met his wife, Cathy Gullett (née Holcomb), for the first time at McKell High School. At McKell, Cathy was a cheerleader, and they met when they were 16.

The couple tied the knot in 1969, two years after their first meeting. A few months later, in 1970, Don impressed everyone in the Cincinnati Reds spring training and made it to the big league roster. 

Don was enjoying a successful marriage with his wife, Cathy, while simultaneously being declared a success with the Reds. The two had moved into an apartment in Northern Kentucky and raised three kids.

On August 11, 1971, Don and Cathy welcomed their first child, Don Gullett Jr. The couple’s eldest son followed in his father’s footsteps and made a career in the sport that they loved the most.

A graduate of Shawnee State University, Don Gullett Jr., began his coaching journey at Northern Kentucky University. During his tenure at NKU, the side won three GLVC Conference Championships (2002, 2004, 2006). 

He later became the head coach of the Northern Kentucky Bandits and led the team to a 2004 CABA World Series Championship. Since 2001, Gullett Jr. has been instructing all ages in a one-on-one setting and serving as the Camp Coordinator for youth camps ages 6-18.

Gullett Jr was a general manager at 5 Star Midwest before he became the head coach at Turpin High. In 2019, he won the Coach of the Year honor after he led Turpin to its first winning season since 2012. 

Don Gullett’s two daughters, Tracey and Angela, are out of the public limelight. Angela is available on Facebook and has shared a few family photographs. 

Tributes Pour In For Don Gullett 

Don’s former team, the Cincinnati Reds, announced his demise on Wednesday.

The Reds CEO Bob Castellini said, “Don dedicated 24 years to this franchise as a player, coach, and Minor league instructor.

An anchor on the pitching staff of one of the greatest baseball teams in history. His contributions to our rich tradition, our city, and his community will never be forgotten.”

The Hall of Fame catcher, Johnny Bench, wrote, “Don Gullett, the best athlete and competitor I ever saw or played with! He will be missed.”

Several Reds fans also took to their social media platforms to pay one final tribute to the legend.

One fan wrote, “Don Gullett was my hero as a Reds fan growing up. His family, friends with our family for generations, made us feel close to him and cheer extra hard for him from high school through life. 

Soft-spoken and unassuming, he loved his sport, family, and friends. I will miss my hero and friend.”
