The close community of Duncan, South Carolina, is mourning the tragic death of 17-year-old athlete Kory Nathaniel Fredericks, who was killed in a shooting.
Kory, a beloved son, brother, and friend, was pronounced dead at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center at 2:47 AM on Sunday, June 22, 2025, leaving behind a grieving family and a community struggling to make sense of the tragedy.
Kory was the cherished son of Scott Fredericks and Marguerite and the brother of Kayla Fredericks, with whom he shared a close bond.
Raised in Duncan, Kory was a standout student-athlete at Dorman High School, where he excelled in both track and field and varsity football.
At 5’11”, he was a skilled athlete with great energy, making him a strong player on the field and an inspiration to his teammates.
Kory’s stepmother, Kelly E., took to Facebook to honor his life, sharing a heartfelt message:
“Please keep my husband, Kory’s mother and siblings in your prayers as we prepare to send my guy home.”

Kory was a shining star on Dorman High School’s 2025 varsity track and field team.
His dedication and talent earned him a slew of accolades, including 1st Team All-Conference, 1st Team All-County, and 2nd Team All-Region honors.
As part of the team, he contributed to their success, which included Conference Champions, 2nd Place in Sectionals, 2nd Place in Regionals, and 3rd Place in the State Championships.
His speed, determination, and teamwork left a lasting mark on his coaches and teammates.
Beyond track, Kory was also a key player on Dorman’s varsity football team, where his athleticism and competitive spirit shone brightly.

The Tragic Incident
According to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to reports of a shooting at Academy Sports + Outdoors, located at 100 Peachwood Center Drive, on the night of June 21, 2025.
Upon arrival, they found evidence of a shooting but no victims at the scene. Shortly after, two victims arrived at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
Kory was one of them, and despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries. The second victim, whose identity has not been released, remains in critical condition.
Chief Investigator Johnathan Lawson of the Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office confirmed Kory’s passing, while Sheriff’s Office Lt. Graham McLellan noted that the investigation is ongoing.

Kory’s death has deeply affected Duncan and the entire Spartanburg County community.
Kory, known for his bright smile, kind heart, and relentless drive, was more than an athlete—he was a friend, a role model, and a source of pride for those who knew him.
Classmates, teammates, and coaches have taken to social media to share memories of Kory’s infectious enthusiasm and continuous determination.
Kory’s family is preparing for his funeral, and the community is coming together to support them.
Vigils and memorials are being organized to honor his life and call for an end to violence. His family asks for prayers and privacy as they cope with their loss.
