NC Father and Coach Albin Demukaj Stays by Son Eldi’s Side After 11-Year Basketball Journey Is Threatened By an Injury

Basketball has always been more than a game for Albin Demukaj and his son, Eldi. It’s a shared journey that has spanned 11 years, filled with countless memories of triumphs, challenges, and a relentless passion for the sport.

However, that journey took an unexpected and heartbreaking turn when Eldi, a rising basketball star, suffered a severe injury.

Eldi Demukaj, who currently plays for the Lucentum Alicante U17 team in Spain’s prestigious EYBL U17, was recently hospitalized after breaking his tibia during a game.

The injury has left the 15-year-old in excruciating pain and uncertain about his future in the sport.

His father, Albin, a North Carolina-based basketball coach, has been by his side every step of the way, offering support and comfort as they wait for answers.

Albin shared his emotional journey on social media, expressing his pain and fear for his son’s future. In a heart-wrenching post, he wrote:

“WHY ME, WHY ME?? Those words from Eldi will haunt me forever. When the shock and adrenaline start to wear off, reality sets in — and with it, fear. Fear for the future. Fear of how much this will impact him. Tomorrow we meet with doctors and hopefully get some answers.”

Albin’s Basketball Diary

The raw emotion behind Albin’s words speaks to the depth of his love and concern for his son.

Basketball has been Eldi’s world, and to see his future in the sport threatened by an injury is a crushing reality for both father and son.

Eldi’s basketball career has been nothing short of impressive, especially considering his young age.

At just 15 years old, he has already made a name for himself in the basketball world, competing at a high level in both Europe and the United States.

Before his move to Spain, Eldi was a standout player for the North Carolina Leadership Academy (NCLA) middle school basketball team.

There, he earned recognition as a Student-Athlete of the Month in May 2025 for his exceptional skills and leadership.

Eldi’s dedication to the sport was evident in his undefeated championship season with his middle school team, where he also received both MVP and Leadership awards for his performance.

Eldi’s talent didn’t go unnoticed, and he soon found himself playing for the prestigious BATL (Be A Tough Leader) team in North Carolina, a youth basketball program that has developed numerous top players.

Eldi’s exceptional athleticism and determination helped him compete against some of the best players in the country, and even some ranked among the top 20 in Europe.

In 2025, Eldi made a career-defining decision to move to Alicante, Spain, to continue his basketball journey. This was after his successful and undefeated season with NCLA’s middle school team.

Eldi’s father, Albin, supported his son’s decision, knowing that this move would provide Eldi with the opportunity to compete at an even higher level, while also broadening his experience on a global scale.

In Spain, Eldi has had the chance to play against some of the best youth basketball talent in Europe.

His impressive stats include an average of 6.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game, with an efficiency rating of 5.8. With a height of 178 cm, Eldi has proven to be a versatile player with great potential.

As Albin sits by his son’s side in the hospital, his thoughts are consumed with worry. The last 24 hours have been the longest of his life, as he struggles to find the strength to stay strong for his son.

Albin shares that sleeping on the hospital floor has only added to his emotional and physical exhaustion, yet he refuses to leave Eldi’s side during this challenging time.

Eldi’s pain is not just physical; it’s the uncertainty of what this injury means for his future in basketball that weighs heavily on him.

In his social media post, Albin recalled Eldi’s words in the hospital:

“Dad, I played against some of the top players in Europe (one is even ranked #18), and I proved I can play at their level. Why did this have to happen to me? Why me?”

Despite the immense emotional toll, Albin remains focused on being there for Eldi, navigating this difficult time together. The fear of the unknown looms large, but Albin holds onto the hope that they will soon have answers.

The meeting with doctors tomorrow will provide a clearer picture of Eldi’s recovery and whether there are any further complications with his injury.

For now, the Demukaj family is taking it one day at a time, holding onto the hope that Eldi will heal and be able to continue his basketball journey.

As Albin watches over his son in the hospital, he remains steadfast in his belief that no matter what, their bond and their shared love for basketball will carry them through this challenge.

Eldi’s journey, though interrupted by injury, is far from over, and with the support of his father, he will rise to face whatever comes next.

In response to Albin’s post, many of Eldi’s loved ones are praying for his speedy recovery and extending their support to the Demukaj family during this challenging time.

One wrote:

“Thinking about you guys, no matter the outcome, there is still plenty of work to be done and opportunities to be had! Eldi is a warrior and I’m sure Dad (and Mom) helped him become that!”

Another added:

“Go Eldi, you will recover very quickly and continue the game even stronger.”
