Elise Cranny’s boyfriend, Sean McGorty, is a cross-country athlete and a former standout at Stanford College. Elise and Sean began dating in 2015.
Though they might not have shared any recent posts together it’s for sure that they are proud of each other’s achievements.
Sean is trying his level best to reach his peak performance after having a series of injuries derailed his career. And Elise has kept on breaking and setting records.
In the recent USATF Championships, Elise Cranny dominated the 5,000m and 10,000m races and became the first woman since Molly Huddle in 2016 to do so. In the same competition, Sean finished third in the 10,000m race.
Elise Cranny Boyfriend, Sean McGorty
Elise Cranny’s boyfriend, Sean McGorty, like her, competes in track and field.
Sean, born on March 8, 1995, is a year older than his girlfriend and was raised in a family of athletes. His parents, Kevin and Vicki, were Division I track and field athletes.
In their interview with the Washington Post in 2013, Vicki said her son was born to run. In 1983, Vicki won the Virginia AAA cross country and took home a gold medal in the 1600 meters.
She met her better half, Kevin, in high school and since has raised three athletic sons. Kevin is a former decathlete and competed in the US Olympic Trials in 1988 and 1992.
His two brothers Ryan, and Brandon McGorty, are track and field athletes like him. Ryan ran for William and Mary and graduated in 2019. His partner, Julia Montgomery, is also a runner.
The McGorty family’s youngest member, Brandon, graduated from Stanford University last year and was a two-time All-American.
Prior to joining Stanford, Sean was the third fastest high school 800 runner in the nation in 2017 and the fourth highest a year before. He also owns four state 1600 titles, both indoors and outdoors.
Sean McGorty Running Career
Sean McGorty expected to play soccer, but that changed in freshman year during high school.
Vicki suggested to her son that he should take up cross country and fit it between his basketball and soccer schedule. He flashed potential from the beginning and slowly started to make running his main focus.
He quickly became the area’s best runner and quit soccer for indoor track and basketball. Then he chose outdoor track over high school soccer and kept his focus on running.
In 2013, with Chantilly High School, Sean won the New Balance Outdoor Championship with a state record and won every cross-country race in 2012 except one.
He had a career filled with accolades at Stanford. In 2017, his senior year with Stanford, Sean won NCAA 5,000 and was the US 1,500 finalist and Big Meet 3,000 winner.
In 2018, Sean made his professional debut at Guldensporenmeeting in Belgium and won the 1500-meter race. He made his steeplechase debut in 2021, setting a personal record of 8:20.77 for the 3,000m.
In 2021, during the preliminary race at the US Olympic track and field trials, McGorty gained attention after he stopped in the middle to fix his shoes.
