Ethan Katzberg comes from a family deeply interested in athletics. The youngest of the two children, Ethan grew up receiving sports coaching from his parents, primarily from his dad Bernie, who is a hammer-throwing coach.
Initially, Ethan was more into basketball and track racing. When his sister, Jessica, started taking coaching classes from their dad, he, too, joined in, thinking it was fun.
Almost seven years later, Ethan Katzberg is the gold-medal-winning hammer thrower at the World Championships. He now thinks this would not have been possible without his dad’s mentoring and his mother’s unwavering support.
Currently in his early twenties, Ethan Katzberg made his major international tournament debut at the 2021 World Athletics U20 Championships. Although he reached the final, the then-inexperienced 19-year-old finished last with no valid throws.
Almost a year later, Ethan won a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, his first accolade in a major tournament.
Following this, Ethan has appeared in and won numerous major competitions, including the gold at the 2023 Meeting de Paris. A few months later, he won his first Canadian national title.
Ethan Katzberg is currently the national hammer throwing record holder, with a throwing distance of 81.25 meters. Likewise, he became the world’s youngest-ever world champion, winning the gold at the World Championships at 21.
Ethan Katzberg Parents: Father Bernie And Mother
Ethan Katzberg was born on April 5, 2002, to his parents, Bernie and Coralee Katzberg, in Nanaimo, British Columbia.
His dad, Bernie, was a short put and hammer-throwing coach. Bernie mentored and coached Ethan’s older sister, Jessica, earlier, as she was the one who was more passionate about the game.
While Jessica was a hammer thrower at John Barsby High School, Ethan, tall and stout, was a basketball player and track events athlete.
Gradually, Ethan began showing interest, and soon after, his dad started coaching both his children.
Meanwhile, his mom, Coralee, who was not much of an athlete, has always supported her children’s sports careers. Ethan does not shy away from saying that he would not have come this far without his mother’s guidance.
Professionally, Coralee Katzberg is a financial advisor. Previously a preschool teacher, she has worked as a financial planner at Benson View Private Wealth, an advisory firm, since 2022.
Olympic Medalist Dylan Armstrong Is Ethan’s Coach
After graduating high school, Ethan Katzberg moved to Kamloops to take training classes from former Canadian athlete Dylan Armstrong.
Born to his mother, Judy, in 1981, in British Columbia, Armstrong is a former hammer thrower turned shot putter.
An accomplished athlete, he won many medals and accolades during his playing career, including a bronze medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics.
Aside from that, Dylan is a two-time World Athletic Championships medalist and the 2010 Commonwealth Games winner. He still holds the Canadian national record for the shot put.
After retiring from his professional career, Dylan started a coaching institute in his hometown, where he first met Ethan Katzberg.
Speaking of Katzberg, Dylan remembers Katzberg as a tall and lean kid when he began teaching him. He says that he was impressed by his speed and tall height, which might be of much help in the long run.
Now that his pupil is doing great internationally, winning competitions one after another, coach Dylan is proud.
After his recent World Championships win, Ethan rushed to his coach to celebrate the historic victory. Katzberg later told the media that so much knowledge had been shared with him by Dylan and Anatolij Bondarčuk, and he had been prepared well for this moment.
