Carl “Trooper” Taylor was born in Cuero, Texas, on February 20, 1970. He was born and raised there in a family of 16.

He attended Baylor University, earning his bachelor’s degree in 1992. Trooper was not only a student at college, as he always played football there.

Taylor was a Baylor Bears defensive back from 1988 to 1991, finishing his career as the school’s leader in kickoff returns and return yardage.

Taylor joined his alma mater’s coaching staff as a graduate assistant for two years after guiding the Bears to the 1991 Copper Bowl.

After earning his degree, the team named him wide receivers coach in 1994. He is presently serving as interim head coach following Mike Elko’s departure to return to Texas A&M as head coach.

Taylor previously worked as an assistant coach at Auburn University. He was the associate head coach and wide receivers coach from January 2009 to December 2012.

It may sound like a fairytale, but Trooper Taylor’s wife, Evi Crosby Taylor, is his college sweetheart.

The couple met in college when both of them were collegiate athletes. Trooper was playing football, while Evi used to be a track and field scholarship athlete at Baylor.

Soon after graduation, they had their dream wedding on the football field at Floyd Casey Stadium in 1993.

His wife is currently an associate dean for MSW education and a clinical assistant professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work. 

She is a certified clinical social worker with over 25 years of experience working with diverse populations in alternative schools.

Evi specializes in juvenile justice programs, hospitals, residential treatment institutions, and private practice.

Dr. Taylor previously worked at Arkansas State University as the MSW Director and co-chair of the Social Work Department. 

She received the University Excellence in Teaching Award in 2017 and the University Excellence in Service Award in 2018.

Furthermore, Dr. Taylor was featured in Women in Higher Education in 2018. Dr Taylor is a member of the board of directors of The Power of 1 or 2, Inc.

Actually, it is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering, educating, and enhancing the lives of children and families by offering resources and opportunities.

Dr. Taylor‘s research interests include stereotypes and implicit bias, educational inequality, and the mental health of sports. She has given national and international presentations on racial inequities.

Taylor Named Interim Head Coach Of Duke

Previously, Associate Head Coach and Running Backs Coach Trooper Taylor had assumed the role of Interim Head Coach for Duke Football.

This change in circumstances occurred following David Cutcliffe’s departure on November 28, 2021.

Trooper Taylor previously held the interim position until the swift appointment of Mike Elko on December 13, just shy of two weeks later.

Joining the Duke coaching staff in January 2019, with his abundant experience, Taylor serves as the program’s associate head coach while mentoring the Blue Devil running backs.

With an impressive coaching career of over 30 years, Taylor notably contributed to Auburn University’s 2010 BCS National Championship win. His portfolio includes coaching in 16 bowl games for schools.

In response to Taylor’s interim appointment, Athletics Director Nina King scheduled a press conference to announce the decision officially.

It also announced the university’s plans to initiate a national search for the next head football coach for the program.
